Take your heads, LIM, etc. and put them on the L36, if you get one. You might be better off trying to find an L32, though. Look for a 2005 Grand Prix Supercharged.

I know that the L36 has a higher compression ratio than a L67, is the difference all in the heads or is the bottom end different as well? L32s are kind of out of my price range..lowest I found on Car-part is $750, I would like to get it down for less.

Do NOT use an L36 bottom end. That's the soundest advice I can give you. I just tore down one that had been top-swapped, and it wasn't pretty. The pistons and rods, as well as the wrist pins are all weaker on the L36.

The same rule applies in my book regarding both the L27 and L36. The bottom ends were not meant to handle boost.

I have no intentions of doing a top swap. If I were to buy a L36, it would remain N/A. I found one L67 at a place in St. Paul, 101K $350 with a 30 day warranty. The guy said it runs good and everything checks out. Everything else I found was $700+. It makes me wonder why he is selling it so cheap. I think I'm going to drive down and check it out.

Yep, the boosted engines have WAY beefier connecting rods and wrist pins. The non boosed have higher compression flat top pistons, but they can not be used on the bigger rods due to a smaller wrist pin hole.

Plan on putting new LIM gaskets in the used engine, it will probably need them.

Yea LIM gaskets for sure will be done to it. I'm leaving to go pick it up now.

L36'ing your SSEi? WTF, no don't do it! Do you understand how much you will have to change to make it work? My first thought is fuel lines...

I found a L32 for $600 when I was looking.

Yea after thinking about it, that wasn't a good idea, plus I found a L67...it's not perfect, but they said it runs good, and I got a 1 year warranty on it.

How much? Where? Miles? Camming it?

I got it from Ace Auto Salvage in St. Paul. Total was $496 with the $50 core charge that I probably won't get back, plus I opted for their 1 year warranty which was a little extra. Came from a 01 PAU, with 101k on it. Right now my plan is to leave it stock, other than my headers, and then rebuilding my original over the summer, and camming that. Kind of sucks cause I'm back to where I started a week ago, but have put a lot of time and money into it. A risk I was willing to take though...you gotta pay to play.

I was looking at that same one. It had poor compression 150, 180, 180, 170, 180, 180, and high miles (200k+?)

With the warranty though you might be ok.

Yea thats the compression, but I was told it had 101k...the compression is why I got the warranty...I didn't realize the numbers on car-part were the compressions otherwise I probably would not have driven down there. I think it will be ok since I won't be modding it.

Rebuilding a 3800 is a far more expensive proposition than you might be prepared to swallow. Parts are not cheap, and tolerances are far tighter than your traditional muscle-car small or big blocks.

Well then I'll probably save up some money and find a good low miles engine. I just needed to find something to get it back on the road quick. I haven't taken the bottom end apart yet, so I don't know how bad it is.

I don't know man, I think they played you. Here are my notes that I wrote down when I was calling around.

$350 for a good running L67 with only 101k doesn't sound quite right. Look at the prices of the other ones....

Image

I'd call them tomorrow and ask about the same engine. They will tell you its sold. Say that you are curious and you were wondering how many miles were on it... then you'll get your final answer.

Those comp #'s may come back up on those two cylinders after it is running. It may have been checked with lifters that were not fully pumped up.

well...the listing on car-part was a little different, but most likely the same engine. It does make sense that it would be high miles...I will definitely be calling them.

Edit: stock number is the same, so it is the same engine.....

I got the LIM taken off the new engine (new to me....lol), and it had the plastic gaskets, but if it does have 230k+, they have been replaced before, probably recently, they were in really good shape, so that is a good sign. Overall the engine was pretty dirty, but after a little cleaning, it is looking better. I apologize for not taking many picture...I don't really have a decent camera, and once I start working, I kind of forget about it.

I have realized that modding my daily driver is not an option anymore. I found that after I replaced the engine on my 99, when I drove, I had a whole different driving style when I drove it, that is going to have to be the same for my 00 now.

Anyway, I'm making a parts run tomorrow morning, then hopefully it will be back in and running by later in the day.
