Ok So I have a 96 Bonneville with the 4T60-E. What all do I need from a donor vehicle to swap in a 4t65E?

If it just the tranny and wiring harnesses and the computer from a 98-99 Bonneville?

Thanks in advance

Why not swap the whole drivetrain/pcm?

To answer your question without having experience in the procedure personally, yes.

Wiring harness
PCM for the correct transmission
Transmission

It has been a long time since I've read up on this stuff so I forget if the CV's will interchange or not, but I'd like to think someone here would know if there is a difference.

Additionally, the 99 L36 uses a different TB and MAF from your 96. You'd either need to have the PCM tuned for the older style TB/MAF or get the newer style as well.

Better to just get the new style TB.

I've done it. Look for axles for a '99 Bonneville. Get the supercharged axle set along with the supercharged differential and output shaft. Swap differential and shaft into your normal 4t65...now you have an HD 4t65e with 3.29 gearing.

If you want to do this, you will absolutely need an H-body 4T65 case. W-body cases do not have the bosses and structural webbing in the back to support the rear trans mount.

PCM...depends on the year of the transmission. I got a 2006 GP transmission with the newer solenoids that appeared in '03. I used an '05 Impala PCM flashed with an '03 Grand Prix GT operating system. And yes, this means having to find a newer harness for your '96 if you go this route.

Why do you really want a HD or a 4t65e??... The 4t60e is just as good and can achieve a 3.66 Final drive ratio, whereas the HD has a higher gearing for top end which will just get better gas mileage and slow the vehicle down in your 0-60 E.T.s... plus a 2800 rpm stall torque converter from the 2.4l twincam will make a sweet 4t60e 33/37 chain sprockets! I have parts P.M. me if interested!

Perhaps he's asking for the sake of consistency in shifts and simplicity of the fully electronic transmission.

sorry for the delay. The reason I am asking about swapping out my 4T60E for a 4T65E is because my 4T60E is shot and Its time for a new tranny. And I want as little problems as possible. there are very few available 4t60e's available in my area but quite a few 4t65e's.

If I did go 4t60e again what can I do to beef it up for long term durability?

I sometimes drive my car hard and I know its hard on the transmission but I just want to build up my trans to handle me driving it hard. I mean I don't drive it like a complete jackass but I do like to get on it from time to time. Plus Eventually I want to supercharge it and I just want something thats going to be able to handle the power.
Shift kit or something? plus I want to make sure I don't have to change Shift or TCC solenoids for a while. any upgrade suggestions?

Thanks and sorry again for the delay in replying. I work alot. and I use my car for work by the way.

A shift kit does wonders to prolong the life of your clutch packs. It's a bit rougher on the hard parts, but you're not laying down 400+hp so we won't worry about that.

Honestly, for the work involved in swapping over to the new style transmission, and the extra cost, I believe you'd be better served to have your current unit rebuilt by a reputable shop. That's just my opinion, of course.
