I have two gauges currently giving me problems with my 00 ssei and I need some expert advice on any possible causes (I'm drawing a blank).

First is the gas gauge, I'm not sure if it has read correctly even once yet, but it seems to be all over the place. When I first start the car, the needle will jump from one side to the other then slowly move up to between the 1/2 and 3/4 mark. It will then "tick" downward once or twice before slowly moving toward full. I repeats this, moving over to the "F" a centimeter or so at a time until it hits full. The needle then stays on full until I turn the bonnie off. This happens every time, without fail.

The tach is also giving me problems, although it does work about half the time. It only looks to be the extended trips where the tach decides to stop. I can tell its about to happen because the needle begins moving slowly and then ticking. After that the needle drops back to zero and stays there until it feels like working again. This seems to be completely random and I have yet to figure out anything that is causing it other than the fact that it seems to die at least once if I'm in the car for more than an hour.

Its also worth saying that the 2 problems don't seem related. The tach just comes and goes and the gas gauge is always on F after the first 15 seconds of driving the car. Anyone have some thoughts as to what is going on? Any feedback would be very appreciated.

i would say you have a ground problem or a bad dash cluster. Have you checked the battery cables for corrosion?

Gas gauge sounds like a wonky sender to me. On the tach, it sounds like a bad ground. All of the other gauges work correctly?

Battery cables are fine, all the other gauges are working correctly. I was thinking bad ground, but the other time that was the case (with an old audi) I always lost a couple gauges at once and they all seemed to die and come back together.

Stupid question here, what all is involved in replacing the sender? My only experience working on fuel lines/tank has been with an early 70's beetle (probably won't help in this situation).
