I wanted to get the 180 degree thermostat, i currently have just a FWI. i will be getting the zzp 2.5 downpipe and HF cat. My question is

can i get the thermostat without getting a tune?

This has been discussed numerous times, but yes. However, the only time you'll actually be at 180* will be on the highway, even in the winter. Any town driving will bump that back up to the OE programmed fan turn on temps, somewhere around 200*.

There is another benefit to the L36. Removing some of the heat from the UIM, particularly if you haven't replaced it yet (in which case you're going to have a catastrophic failure). EGR burn-through is a guarantee, and if it happens, odds are high you'll kill the bottom end of your motor.

I did replace the upper, around 4 months ago.

Yup. That's a good one. I suggest drilling a 1/16" diameter hole in the rim, just inside of where the rubber seal rides. It helps burp air out of the system.
