Anyone interested in a retrofit?

Post by MurderMitten »

Hey all, so my original plan was to break open my headlight that didn't get smashed in the crash and steal the projector out of it but I was thinking. If I went to junkyard and found a driver side headlight and just retrofitted that one I'd have a set again and sell it to someone. Similar to what Carl is doing but just a one time thing. I'm just gauging to see if anyone is interested if I did this or if I should open up my other headlight and sell the HID kit and projectors on craigslist. They wouldn't be perfect, as in the lenses are not crystal clear, they are not trashed though, could use a little bit of clearing up is all. Would sell with a DDM tuning 12V35W kit with 6000K bulbs. Mini H1 projectors with Gatling gun shrouds. I'd ask $200 without the HID kit, $230 with it. Let me know
Here is what they look like.

That's a great deal.

Whoever buys it can just swap their lenses on it.

What timeline are you looking at?

Depending on how long the build will take and how much shipping would be, I'm interested.

I can get a retrofit done in a day. It depends on how many bonnevilles are in my local JY and if they have headlights in them. A lot of the times those are the first to go. Shipping I'm not too sure of. Never really shipped much so I'd have to figure out a quote. shouldn't cost too much.

Wait, does your set have HIR brights or would I have to use a different bulb?? I know the HIDs are plug and play but I don't want to lose the HIRs.

Thanks!

No those only came on GXP's. I personally did not use my bright bulbs because to use the Bi-Xenon you plug the plug from the projector into the high beam plug, which when you turn on your brights opens a shutter in the projector and lets the HID bulbs go full power. You could splice the High beam wire into two so your high beams and the shutter opens but I see no point as the projector is your low and highbeam in one unit.

Oh, I guess I didn't realize they were bi-xenon. So how does the wiring work? Do I need to hack up my stock harness or do both the brights and dims plug into this setup?

Sorry for asking soo many questions, I'm new to this idea but love the way it looks.

The GXP turns off its low beams when you turn on the high beams. So if you want to use the bixenon functionality of the projectors, you will need these:

ALL GM vehicles with dual bulb lights (I.E. 9006 & 9005 setups), that AREN'T a low beam HID, turn off the lows (and fogs if so equipped), when the highs are activated.

It's a Federal limit on lumen output that makes them do that. The only reason low beam HID's are exempt is because if they turned them off when highs are activated, and they go for a long time with the highs on, then switch back to lows, the HID's have to re-warm again. So the driver is temporarily in the dark until the bulbs are back up to full strength.

Back in the stone ages, the cars I and my parents had that were quad-headlight, low beams 2 lamps light, high beams 4 lamps light. That was late 50's early 60's. By 1969, even with quad light systems, only 2 at a time were light, that is IIRC. - BC

My SE was quad beams with highs on with the original harness and still quad beam highs with the '04 SLE harness.

Yeah, Penny has quad beams too. The GXPs changed it up because of the HIR, IIRC.

To both of you, there is 1 of two options happening;

1) Someone installed a relay harness in that can control this feature. I had several of these that I put into vehicles (primarily GM full-size trucks, including my own), as aftermarket equipment.

2) Something in your harness/switch/etc is fubared.

Straight from GM for a 2003 SLE;
With the headlamp switch in the ON position, a ground path is available for the headlamp switch headlamps on signal circuit of the DIM through the headlamp switch. The DIM provides ground to either the headlamp low beam relay control circuit or the headlamp high beam relay control circuit. The position of the headlamp dimmer switch determines which relay control has ground.
Meaning, which ever one has the ground is the set of lights that are going to be on. NOT both at the same time.

It doesn't matter whether it's a 9006/9005 bulb or a 9006/HIR setup. This is the way GM has been wiring these since day one on 9006/9005 composite headlight setups.

My 2000 SSEi, as well as my friend's (both unmodified headlights) have quad beams headlights. The description is a bit different. The fogs, if lit, do go out.
HIGH BEAM HEADLAMPS
The DIM supplies battery positive voltage to the HDLP Hi BM relay coil when the headlamps or park lamps need to be on or when the ignition switch is in ON position. Battery positive voltage (B+) is always supplied to the HDLP HI BM relay switch through the underhood fuse block. When the low beam headlamps are on as described above and then the headlamp dimmer switch is placed in the high beam position, the HDLP HI BM relay coil is grounded. The coil is energized closing the switch contacts. This supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the HDHIBML Fuse and HDHIBMR Fuse. HDHIBML Fuse supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the LH high beam headlamp. HDHIBMR Fuse supplies battery positive voltage (B+) to the RH high beam headlamp. The RH high beam headlamp is permanently grounded. The LH high beam headlamp is grounded through the DRL Relay when not energized. Both high beam headlamps have power and ground, and then light.
*Gone, but not forgotten* - Black 2000 SSEi, HIR Headlights, Angel Eyes fogs, 3rd brake light overlay, hi-flo cat, 180 degree thermostat, HS 1.9 rockers, LSx yellow springs, Intense FWI, PCM, shift kit, push rods, and 3.4 Pulley. ZZP Power Log.

Neither harness was modified, they are like that stock, I think I remember my '03 SSEi was the same way as well.

As far as this retrofit goes, I am interested pending finances in the coming weeks, have a bunch of other car stuff that has to come first :lol:
