Hey guys

Quick question my 2004 bonneville SE battery has a cca of 770 is it possible to put a higher cca of 840 in it or does it have to be 770 as i need to replace the battery in it

The more cold cranking amps the better.

But the more CCA the more expensive as well

Kinda the wrong section as this isn't a GXP, but the info is still the same. More power is always better (kinda like horsepower), you can never have enough!

But as long as it fits the rear seat recess for it, and has the vent provision, is all that matters in addition to meeting the OEM level of CCA. Most people don't realize that all CCA's are, are the measure of of starting amps a battery can deliver at 0*, and do it for 30 seconds while maintaining a minimum 7 or 8 volts (I don't remember the exact amount). So if you live in Florida, CCA's aren't as important as someone living in Canada. But a higher CCA doesn't mean it'll turn your engine over any faster than a lower rated CCA battery.

What I would also factor in, is the reserve capacity of the battery. Generally speaking, a battery with a higher CCA, typically also has a higher RC. Obviously the higher the RC, the longer it can run without being charged by the vehicle's alternator. Key if you forge to turn your lights off, or leave a phone plugged in and charging, etc...

Cliff Notes: Buy whatever battery has the most CCA, most RC, and fits the vehicle, and fits your budget.

Don't get wrapped up in "well battery A has 50 more CCA than the OEM class battery." You won't know the difference hitting the key each morning.

Wouldn't a higher rated battery also last longer?

What is the "vent provision" you talk of?

I haven't looked at mine, but would like to know how important it is and what it looks like.

Since it's under the backseat, there are vent tubes that run from small vents on the sides to vent the battery outside the cabin. The new battery needs to have those vents.

Even if it is a sealed battery?

I'm assuming the factory battery was sealed. I'll have to see what the previous owner put in it 2yrs ago.....

Yup. All batteries will vent but being under the backseat they must have vent tubes. There is actually a warning tag that says if the vent tubes are not hooked up it will burn a hole through the seat.

There is a regular and HD option for the battery... I think its a choice of a 78 or 79 series.. and you can still get the vent tubes iirc..

Statistically? Yes!

Reality? That is based on your driving and electrical load habits. I've had top line Optima's run out in three years (due to the high load put on it by power sliding doors, liftgates, entertainment systems, etc), wheras most of my regular AC Delco OEM batteries I can get a minimum 6 years out of. I got nearly 7 out of the Bonneville, The Caddy is on year #7 now, my GTO went 6 (which is a feat in and of itself as the cars hit the U.S. shores with dead and shorted out batteries from the key being left in the ignition while they were moving the car around, which leaves the radio on for awhile each time) ... Part of this is because I'm mindful of the use. I don't have on electric accessories when I don't need them, and I generally make sure if I start the car, I drive it/run it long enough to allow the alternator to recharge (I.E. I try to avoid short trips).

If you drive around with your lights, wipers, defroster on full blast, listening to your stereo at high volumes, with the rear defogger on, while charging your cell phone constantly, and having all these accessory lighting that is becoming popular ALL the time, then the best battery in the world is gonna have a shelf life of a loaf of bread.

And I will throw this out again, all car batteries in the world are made by two or three main battery makers. Johnson Controls is one of them. They make them for many different brands. Meaning the AC Delco in your car is probably the same DieHard we sell here at Sears, just with a different case/label on it. So don't get all fretted out over which one looks better on a stat sheet. They're pretty much all the same in each of their respective class (wet, gel, etc). Back to my original post, buy what has the most CCA, most RC, fits the vent tube provision on the Bonneville, and fits your budget.

All batteries create a chemical reaction to generate electricity. As such they need to vent. Under a hood, it's dissipated with air flow etc. In the back seat, it's trapped inside the car and can actually be dangerous to breathe.

Johnson Controls does make a huge chunk of the batteries out there... At current I have a couple of 2008 walmart batteries( Everstart MAXX )... One is a Group 78 used in my project cars... Starts everytime and still takes a charge and holds it... same goes for the large one that came out of a Crown Vic... Both 5 years in and treated badly...

My van has a 75 series Exide close to 3 years old, fires the first time everytime even after 3 weeks of sitting.. The 95 Bonneville has a 78 series exide only been a year tho but no starting issues at all....

The 03 SLE has an interstate 79 series... Over 5 years old and still kicking...

Here is the kicker, I have a 92 Mitsu that still has the battery I bought in 02... Its been 11 years, the batter will not hold a charge for more than a week, but will still take a charge and start the car if it doesn't sit all week.. I will be replacing that one soon.. That battery too is a Wal Mart everstart... ( Johnson Controls )..

I'd say get the 79 series (900-1000 amp with a 115-120 RC )

I still say you get what you pay for...
