I've got a few questions regarding my trans. It shifts fine but when i go into reverse my car shakes and makes a loud clunk. The car has 103,000 miles and it has never had a transmission fluid change. The fluid level is good and the fluid has a reddish/amber color to it. My question is what would cause a transmission to spin (revs with no acceleration). I was told by my mechanic it needs a fluid and filter change. What do you guys think?

Also whenever i am done driving my car, the engine compartment smells like burn't plastic. THe motor is newly rebuilt and the transmission fluid doesn't smell burnt.

I was also told the clunk when going into reverse was a trans mount. But which one?

Sounds like it's time for a tranny rebuild. Mine went out at 187k, the reverse reaction shell (I think that's what it's called?) grenaded. Had odd grinding noises for a few days before the catastrophic failure, even sounded "rattly" at idle in park. Be sure to use the Sonnax TCC apply valve upgrade, my trans guy didn't, said he "checked" mine and it was within specs. I (or someone) will be back in the trans soon to do the proper upgrade.

When shifting in reverse the entire engine moves around. It drives fine and shifts fine. I am hoping the transmission is salvageable. No bearing noise and the grinding doesn't happen all the time.

If you're getting a lot of movement, check the rear dogbone trans mount, and the front mount as well. You may need to make the solid mount from the hockey puck method. I'm sure a few people can post pics of the mounts, and how to construct the solid front mount as well.

As far as the grinding, that's a whole different issue that other will chime in on soon. Could you possibly take a video of it?

The hockey puck mount doesn't apply to his car, or yours jfridge. 00+ only. The only one who has tried to make a solid mount on a 92-99 is willwren, and he's gone through 7 or 8 versions now...

i can feel the grind through the floor boards. When i push the pedal to the floor the grinding/buzzing is not there. It only occurs when i softly accelerate.

Check the front transmission mount, and the rear dogbone. Have a friend stand on the brakes, put the car in D and R, and give it a little gas. Stand off to the side, and watch the motor. If the front surges up in D, it's the front mount. If the rear surges up in R, it's the rear mount. Surges means it appears to leap up about an inch or so.

Learn from the mistakes of others, that way when you mess up you can do so in new and interesting ways.

Alright i do not think the transmission is making the noise. Is it possible that the cv axles or wheel bearings could make a grinding/buzzing sound with floorboard vibrations. THe noise only emerges when slowely accelerating from a complete stop.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

The grinding the passenger floorboards is the TAM (torque axis mount), I 100% guarantee it.

I had it my 95, and also the 97 I sold to my dad.

So the passenger side vibration is caused from the TAM. What about the driver side?

Well it causes the metal on metal transfer on the passenger side of the frame, but it can transfer then to the entire car.

You will have success in replacing the TAM.

Where did you buy your TAM? How much was it?

Giving everbody an update...Transmission was grinding due to low fluid. Checked the fluid an it is on the bottom line that says "Add .5 Quart". Added it and the grinding has died some. Transmission is leaking fluid (pan gasket?). Fluid is still an amber color. If my transmission needs replaced should i rebuild or buy one used from Harofreak00?

Believe it or not, at about 170k my transmission started to whine and be very unhappy...infact it slipped once or twice. I decided to drop the pan and replace filter/change fluid (not a flush, just a drop pan..you only lose half (about 6 quarts iirc). Filter was caked...weighed a ton..filled plus had half a thrust washer in my pan. Replaced fluid, new filter...good as new since...I'm at 199,205 today without an issue.

Smell the trans fluid and tell us if it smells burnt.
