On Star ??

Post by santacarl »

Hey All,

01 SSei car. Does anyone know if On Star still reports data even though you don't subscribe to the service any longer? I just read an article that On Star has been selling data to insurance companies who are using it to increase insurance rates. Yikes!

Your 01 is analog and the system does not operate even if you wanted it. I think you're safe.

Thanks Haro....

So did they change to a digital system on OnStar and by doing so basically cancelled my onboard satellite ability? If so I wonder how many older cars they disabled....

In my case it's not a big deal because I dropped coverage when the 1 free year was over. I had wondered, though, if my HUD used GPS to calculate speed.....

Analog OnStar Ends Jan. 1, 2008

Your HUD pulls speed data from the PCM, just like the instrument cluster.

I'm fairly skeptical of some reports regarding data being sold to insurance companies. I suppose my questions would revolve around what type of information this allegedly is?

My Bonneville has 3G LTE OnStar, but there needs to be a lot more than this to do things such as report accurate speed information. Our work vehicles have dedicated, high-end mapping and GPS systems that are tracked 24/7 (or at least when logged in). They have made a determination that even with this advanced equipment, the GPS speed data is insufficient to bring about disciplinary action to staff. Systems specifically designed for this are starting to be installed in our vehicles, but they are designed to collect and record speed, braking, G-forces, acceleration, engine RPM and numerous other information. If I was concerned about my speed or other driving habits being monitored, this is the kind of equipment that would raise my eyebrows.
