Output Driver what exactly does it mean

Post by MKMike »

I was checking some things on my 2000 SSEi with a Tech 2 and saw that I can view Output Driver data, so I did.
The Fuel Pump Speed Control kept toggling between OK and Fault.
Does this indicate that the issue is with the ECM or can it be a problem anywhere in the fuel pump speed control circuit?

Thanks for the manual.
Unfortunately, there's no info on the Output Drivers there.

if there is no driveability issue, I would first scan another 2000 SsEi and compare the readings. no sense going into diagnostic mode without a true issue with the ride.

There is a definite driveability issue.
What I'm trying to determine is whether the Output Driver Data Fault means that there is definitely a problem in the PCM/ECM or if the problems could lie entirely elsewhere in the fuel pump speed control circuit.

I don't know what is normal data on a tech2 but I wonder if you might have a fuel pump relay that is on it's way out. With the car running measure the current on the control (ground) circuit of fuel pump relay for a couple of minutes. It should be less than an amp. if it is over an amp replacing the relay is a good idea.

Thanks Michtom.
I suspect a problem with the "unique to 2000 Bonneville" Fuel Pump Speed Control module, due towater leaks that could have shorted it out at some point in time.
I have a FPSC module from Harofreak00 and will install it on a warmer day, so I'll have my answer soon.
What I've been wondering is whether the PCM/ECM actually diagnoses itself and tells you there's a PCM/ECM issue via Output Driver Data info
OR
if the ODD is like the trouble codes- not pinpointing a problem but giving you an area to examine.
I now have it from a reliable source that it is not pinpointing a trouble with the ECM but simply indicates that there's trouble in the FPSC circuit.

Appreciate the replies, guys and I'll update after I fix the trouble.
