What you don't see of the evaporator dirt/debris buildup

Post by MKMike »

I recently replaced the evaporator core (and the rest of the AC system, as the car came w/o a compressor and was left open for at least a year .)
It amazed me to find this after opening up the housing https://www.flickr.com/photos/62751362@ ... tostream//

This is a side view so you can see how thick the debris buildup was https://www.flickr.com/photos/62751362@ ... otostream/]

..and no, it isn't photoshopped or altered. That's how much junk was built up!

It was so thick and in there for so long that it actually rotted away part of the evaporator housing.
Used a bit of AC super sticky duct sealing foil tape to hopefully keep it sealed.
(I tried to add the pictures directly but it didn't work.)

This is exactly why the 2000+ have a cabin air filter.... not that it matters though because I think only 0.001% of owners actually even know it's there and change it

Now that I did not know. I thought I read that the frame was not installed in later years but that was it, really wouldn't surprise me I guess.

..But the 93 does have a nifty little 1/8" thick piece of foam on the back of it. ;)

Despite all of the hassle, I'm certainly glad I went to the trouble of replacing the evaporator.
I smile every time I use my now new AC system!
