I was getting something fairly large out of the backseat of the G8, and part of its metal frame rubbed the edge of the door jamb/fender. How can I make that disappear for cheap? It's through the clear and the paint in some spots.

I would be willing to bet that it can look 90% better with just a good polish. Maybe even a bit better with some touch up paint and wetsanding beforehand. Detailing experts (Ryan) could probably confirm.

If it is through the clear / paint then touch up paint would be the cheapest and best route to go with it. Build it up with a couple layers, lightly wet sand it down, then polish it and that should take care of it.

A better pic might be needed to fully show it, but a general polish isn't going to help much. Maybe 30% at most. That was my first thought.

Can you recommend a wet sanding process? Never done it.

I would personally look over at
AutoGeek forums for some wetsanding tutorials. In the meantime, I'll be looking.
EDIT found a video and such by Mike Phillips. To view, you may or may not have to have an account.

I am gonna have to call the insurance card on this one. Should fall under comprehensive.
May as well get it fixed right, because you are gonna see it from the way you describe it.

The touch up paint before wetsand/polish method sure worked well when Ryan did my GXP:
There were bits of the damage that went right through the paint. Almost undetectable, the only person who would have known work was done would have been myself or Ryan.

Sanding on a corner like that is never a good idea though. The paint around it's always thinner, and you run a huge risk of going right through it. I'd dab on touch-up paint and see if you can polish it a bit.
So what were you removing from the car? This is a must-know.

I'll never live that one down

Got hit in February 2012, new plates in April, and Ryan detailed it in May.

I'm guessing you missed the part of my damage on the bumper, at the edge around the headlight. Wetsanding can work just fine.

I'm guessing Ryan went right up to the corner on both sides?

Yeah, being on the bend of a 1-2mm radius was my primary concern, really.
What I was getting out was this. The power company told me the power would be out till late Wednesday night. So I drove two hours and picked up my sister's generator. It went in fine after taking the seat bottom out. Got home, got it out in a not quite as smooth manner. The power came back on an hour later...
