Why does every American car forum I use hate Fram filters so much?.

I've used them for years, as good as any other, no better, no worse than most others IMO.

I've never seen a properly conducted, peer reviewed comparative test that shows any downside to them.

On this forum alone we've seen multiple failures of Fram filters. They are absolute crap, at least here in the States. Pop-can thin metal, glued together cardboard filtering media. Absolute crap. I wouldn't recommend my worst enemy run them.

Any properly conducted peer reviewed write ups?.

I mean blind tests carried out under controlled conditions.

The last time I read of such a test of filters (1987 I think) Fram came out TOP, ahead of some manufacturers oem filters in a few cases and equal to all others.
I don't work for Fram, and I'm not trying to start a war, just sceptical. Perhaps I should move to Missouri .

That's the kind of thing I was asking about, Thank you.

One thing we can be sure of, to make something good means it can't be made cheap, whether it's filters or fishing rods.. But just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's good.

I looked up the test article I was referring to in my earlier post (Consumer Reports Feb. 1987). They commissioned a university to carry out controlled condition tests for filtration efficiency and flow capacity for a range of popular applications.
They tested Fram, Lee, AC, K Mart, Motorcraft, Purolator and Sears brands.
Fram filters simply came out best across the board, curiously some AC filters were made in the USA and some in England, the English ones had more flow capacity than the domestic ones. With British workmanships reputation then I found that surprising!.

Of course that was 26 years ago, I would be interested to read of a similar test made more recently.
