Transmission Removal?
Hey guys my transmission broke and I need to replace it... Is it easier to pull the motor and transmission or does the transmission come out by itself underneath?

Re: Transmission Removal?
The entire engine/trans can come out the bottom with the subframe and struts, if you have a way to lift the car off it and a way to roll the subframe around. That is generally easier, if you are able. Once out, you can separate them. Make sure you unbolt the motor mounts from the subframe and remove the flywheel bolts first as they are hard to get to when the subframe is sitting on the ground.
If you have a proper brace to hold the motor in from the top you can separate the motor from the trans; keeping it in the engine bay when you drop the subframe and trans. This will be faster, but it gets tricky to align things when putting back together.
It's more time consuming to pull it out the top as the CV axles have to come out before you pull it. The drivers side rear trans mount is what makes this harder as there is not much room to unbolt it from the trans. But you only need the engine hoist.
Edit: Why not just replace the differential housing? If that's the only thing that broke that is. Can't tell if something inside is broken from the pic.

Re: Transmission Removal?
Here's a tech-info article on how to remove the trans from the bottom: http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... ic156.html
Typically, that type of diff cover failure is from the diff pin shearing and wearing a groove into the housing.. which weakens it and eventually fails.
This will send a bunch of aluminum through the trans that the magnet obvioulsy won't catch and can do a fair amount of damage. But, in the past others have just swapped out the diff/cover with success.

From the factory, no. But you will need them when you re-install.
