95 Series I L67 Spun Bearing
Hey there. Recently I was sitting in traffic and my 95% of the time erroneous oil psi gauge dropped. At the time I didnt think anything of it because I knew it was leaking and giving me false readings. However, 2 miles down the road I developed a very slight knock. So I towed the car to my storage unit, got my Dodge out and put it in there. Checked the dipstick and there's definitely bearing material in there. I havent torn it down yet to see the root cause but I had a few questions before I start my project. Now I do plan on picking up another motor, I'd rather not chance a rebuild what with bearing material floating around in there and all. I know a 94-95 L67 will bolt up with no issue. But what about a Series II swap? I know I'd have to change the ECU with the II being OBDII and the I being, well, I. But what else entails that job? Has it been done before? Is it even possible? Like I know for an Intrepid, you can put a 98-01 motor in a 02-04 car, but you would need to change the flexplate, one of the camshafts, the whole plenum, ect. Is that something similar to this swap? Another thing is that the tranny in the car supposedly has a broken sun gear and will thunk in park and neutral. If I'm going to have to take out the motor, I might as well replace the tranny. I dont plan on building the car to super high HP outputs, so can a normal 60E bolt up without it grenading? I would love a slightly shorter ratio other than 2.98. Thanks for the help!

Okay, did a little bit of sleuthing and looks like the Series II isnt the way to go. I found a Series I L67 with 98k on it. I'd have to get it shipped to me, but the price seems fair. Before I order it, I just wanted to get the tranny issue squared away so I could get a tranny shipped over with the motor as sort of a package deal.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I ended up also replacing the motor, and the car now runs great!

So no advice on subbing a 60E HD for a normal 60E or anything to look out for when swapping the motor? Anything I should look for maintenance-wise that would be easier with the motor out?

Part of rebuilding should entail a complete disassembly and cleaning of the motor. If you are using a quality filter, any leftovers (shouldn't be any) will then be trapped in your first oil change.Squilliam wrote:I'd rather not chance a rebuild what with bearing material floating around in there and all.
For your question, what year is the donor Series 1 L67 + trans?

The motor is out of a 95 PAU as well with 95k on the clock. The tranny I havent really found just yet. Im trying to find a lower mileage one with some shorter gears than the ones I have now. But IDK if you can mate a normal 60E up to an L67 without it going boom in a few thousand miles.MattStrike wrote:Part of rebuilding should entail a complete disassembly and cleaning of the motor.
