Hi all

Today on the way to class my service stabilty system message cam on the DIC. What does this mean? And what would cause this?

Thanks, Keith

Are your TRAC and ABS trouble lights also lit?

no neither of the abs or trac lights were or are on.

90% likely it's your Steering Wheel Position Sensor. That's the most common culprit, but it could be a bad Yaw Sensor as well. Only way to know is to have it scanned by a dealer or someone with a high-end Snap-On scanner.

But that won't help at all if the car goes into a sideways skid in the snow, or other conditions. The stability system is set up to make sure the car goes in the direction the steering says it should.

I'd check your wheel bearings for movement. I had been watching one of my front bearings for a couple years which had a small amount of play while the other bearing was tight.

The tire company told me one of my bearings was loose enough. They said symptoms might include the Stability System signal on my driver display. I then realized that the car would occasionally but rarely at parking speed give the Stability message when I turned the wheel to the side, which must have caused the wheel to move on the bearing and made the Stability message show up.

When I checked at home the bearing had developed a little more play, and it was probably over the .005 in spec in the FSM for lateral movement.

New Timken: message hasn't shown up since.

FWIW my front struts are weak enough from so much mileage that any unusual combination of manouvers will set off the service stability warning - like ramping off the end of my driving and turning at the same time. I think a good wind gust from the side once set it off - lol.

mine comes on also. it has came on from in town driving 25-30 mph and also at highway 55-60 mph. i thought it was a bearing but none of them appear to be loose. i might check into the steering next.
