Keeps stalling on me :(

Post by Alibi »

Hi all, just got the '89 running agian with a new starter. It was running fine yesterday but today I'm driving to a gas station and it just starts stalling out on me around 45. My first thought is that I've got a bad coil or ICM so I'm going to swap those out now with a spare set I've got laying around.

I'm not getting any codes other than a code 34 but thats because I forgot to plug the MAF back in a couple days back and it set the code. I keep reading the ECM but no codes other than the 34. I may go ahead and swap in another MAF I have handy and reset the ECM anyway while I swap out the ICM.

Any other thoughts while I'm doing this?

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? As odd as this may sound, junk in the filter can clog it around 45 MPH as the fuel flow increases enough to jam junk in the filter against the outlet.

Hmm... That was done around 15k miles back. The car has been sitting for the last couple months and it ran fine then. Dunno... anyway, I just pulled and swapped the ICM with a known good unit and I'm goign to take the other one to an Autozone to get tested.

I guess I'll see if it works right on the way over...

Got it! It was the MAF afterall. I had yet another spare laying around (I collect spares just for such occasions) so I swapped it in and no more chugging and no more codes.

As an added bonus, I did go ahead and swap over the coils. The ones I pulled off had two red bases and one yellow base. The ones that went on had blue bases. From what I understand, the ones with the blue bases are "newer" and are better than the red ones? Dunno, but the car seems to be idling better.

I think I'm going to go ahead and replace the fuel filter in the near future though. I've heard numbers at 10k miles and 30k miles as for a correct interval so I figure I'll get mine somewhere in the middle.
