Can you tell me how to get to the bulbs on the steering wheel? I'm scared I'm going to break something or have the airbag blow up in my face!!
The soldering I can handle.
Thanks,

Just pull the button pod straight out. Its not held in with anything but friction. The wires behind are kinda short.
Its not the soldering, its finding cheap LED's.

I've got a couple of "donor" radios around. Are the steering wheel controls clear or red?
Thanks,

Thanks again,
would a board from a stereo have any bulbs like these?

Doubt it, but I have no idea what stereos you have.

Still getting PM'd asking if I still do this. Yes, I do, getting pretty good at it too.

Any thoughts of using LED's instead of incandescent bulbs?

I know this has been covered, and LED's have so much less resistance that something in the board would be all goofed up unless you used a resistor.

The whole LED idea has been covered in the tutorial:

I just read the tutorial and not the following posts. I think I will stick to just replacing all the bulbs. I have a few that have gone in the 04.
Thanks for helping me out.

This may be a stupid question

but my stereo no longer shows what station it is on or what song etc like it used to. I checked into a new stereo - dealership is like $500, if I get a new radio elsewhere, the steering wheel controls will no longer work. So I just put up with never knowing the station!! Is the issue the bulbs? The radio itself works fine, plays cds and tapes!! Do I have to send the whole radio or does that section pop out?

I'm sure Andrew will be around to answer this himself, but yes, your bulbs burned out. Andrew can sell you a stock stereo with new bulbs for MUCH less than $500, and your steering wheel controls will still work. I bought one from him a few weeks ago, and it is very nice to have my display back.

This is an older thread but are you still installing display bulbs? I am interested. I'm working with an 03 Bonneville. I have a blank screen after disconnecting/reconnecting battery terminals but radio/cd still play. I'm thinking maybe the voltage spike from reconnecting the terminals popped the last working bulb on the display...

Do you still replace the bulbs on the A/C heater control module?

on the subject of bulbs, can I assume that the DIM has bulbs as well? I haven't looked closely at mine, but it doesn't light up at all in my car, and I haven't seen any other pictures of a lit dash that shows the DIM module. If it is lit, then I'd have to assume it has the same surface mount LED's as the steering wheel controls?
Also, I found 12v SMD style LED's with a good spread in multiple colors on ebay for a decent price. They worked really well in my Cluster light replacement. The hardest part was figuring out the polarity of the circuit for each light.
