hey guys i am working on getting details together for my dream/project car i want to do. my ultimate goal is for it to look stock but be able to have more power then some of the 4 and 6 cylinder mustangs. i want it to be able to make some where between 500 and 550 hp. yes i wail turbo it to get it there, but thats for another post. so was wondering if anyone knows if there is a manual transmission that would fit the 3800 for front wheel drive. i know some things would have to be changed/ modified.

Matt Styx did it, but he did the twin charge method. Had a lot of trouble getting it to hold the power. It's a lot of work to get the transmission into the car, let alone holding any of the power. You need custom axles at the very least. Hopefully Matt sees this and chimes in.

I'm only running 7psi, I am limited by fuel injectors and the desire to make sure all the custom stuff I did was up to my standards and not just going to break when I turn up the boost. The trans holds up fine at that power level (97mph on the track to give you some idea). I'm probably pushing 260hp right now, don't know. I haven't looked recently, but I have yet to find someone breaking an F40 with too much power, it was usually either severe abuse or other factors like 2nd and 4th engaging at the same time due to shifter mis-alignment or something like that.

The biggest hurdle is axles. You have two options. Custom driveshaftshop dot com 500hp or 800hp axles. There is nothing you can mix and match from GM to make this work (at least not that I could find). I've tried both cutting and welding them, and had custom center shafts machined; I was breaking the axles at 3psi. Budget $1000 at least for this.

Next is the body frame channel clearance on the drivers side. So you either cut and weld the frame for clearance and add strength to the area, or cut and weld mounts to shift the entire drivetrain package over.

The rest of it is normal, sourcing parts, modifying the parts and car to fit together (the clutch is the hardest part of that). You need a clutch pedal and master, clutch line, complete shifter and cables, jackshaft and mount, clutch and pressure plate meant for the swap. Then you need to be able to build and modify everything from trans mounts and body metal to exhaust manifolds and plastic welding.

If you don't own at least a MIG welder and basic metal fabrication tools you shouldn't be doing this swap. Feel free to ask anything specific, I am probably leaving out little details.
