Auto light annoyance

Post by Beagle112 »

Hello! I'm new here and my first car is a 2005 Bonneville. I've had it for 6 months and I need help disabling my automatic headlights. To me this is the most annoying feature of the car and I want it gone. Does anyone know how to turn it off?

As far as I know, there is no way to disable it.

Auto Headlights are a designed as a safety feature. Why would you want to disable them?

There are times when I wish the car started without the lights on, or to disable the interior lights at night, etc. Not a huge deal, but definitely annoying occasionally.

Only thing I know you can do if in park is to turn the left timer switch to off... The lamps will stay off till you pull the shifter out of park..

Yeah, you can buy a 1985 Bonneville. Those had manual headlights.

Personally, I think this should be mandatory across all brands and models. I drive a lot at night and the number of idiots out there who don't have their lights on in pitch black small hours of the morning is crazy. Automatic headlights definitely fix this and make people visible from all directions. Don't misunderstand, I don't think the masses should be punished for the inept ability of some to break open their owner's manual and read about how their car works, but in this case it's clearly far safer. Usually the only people who need to be lurking around in the dark without headlamps are the police. With the exception of the stupidity factor of those who don't know where their headlamp switch is, the only others are frequently up to no good.

Why is this so bothersome? It seems like a pretty straight forward, logical approach.

Two systems are potentially being talked about in this thread.

Original poster asked about "automatic headlights"

By "automatic headlights", do you mean the;
"Twilight Sentinel" feature on the car that turns on the headlights automatically when in that mode, such as dusk or early morning?

Or are you referring to;
"Daytime Running Lights" (or DRL's), that power on a bulb (could be a headlight, a nacelle light, a parking light, an LED light, etc), similar to motorcycles where once the car is in gear a light is on all the time?

I can tolerate the twilight sentinel feature if forced upon me, but I HATE DRL's and remove them/disable them any way, any how I can.

I don't recall exactly what I did, but I think I disabled them on mine by pulling a DRL relay somewhere, but it's been awhile since I had the car, so... Regardless, in my ownership, my DRL's were never on and I had all manual control over my headlights.

hi, check the relays and fuses for the daytime running lights - pull the relay and see if that helps
