steering intermediate shaft

Post by pfmeeks »

On the 04 Bonneville SE im getting the popping sound when turning, ive read its due to a bad intermediate steering shaft. Is this a dangerous problem ? Ive read it can be removed and greased or just replaced ?

It's not dangerous, more of an annoyance. I would recommend replacing with the improved design, that's what I did. Under TECHINFO there is an excellent write up or if you look at the bottom of this thread related topics come up.

Or you can grease it on the car with some spray lithium grease. Got rid of my pops in 5 minutes. Just need to remove the lower hush panel and spray inside the boot.

Dealer lubed mine, too. It lasted a few months and came back again. They've replaced it twice now. I'm guessing the first one was the original design because it didn't last either. The second replacement has caused zero problems and it's been several years now. On a side note, the boneheads cut the boot open with a knife for easier access to the bolt. I discovered this a short time ago when I went in to replace the steering wheel position sensor. I bought a new boot and installed it. It's a little more difficult to do without cutting it open but is definitely possible.
