Between these two, the Dayton has a higher Xmax. Beyond that and power handling, I don't know how to compare them really. I'd put either one in a 1 cuft sealed box and power it with:

IMHO from the research i have done to find the perfect amp for the perfect sub this is going to be the sub you are going to want to get as it handles 400W of RMS output and the RMS on your amp at 4 Ohms is 300W so thats alot closer than the other sub which handles 500W RMS output so basically you want to try to match the RMS numbers and the Speaker up as close as possible so that you can maximize the sound and dept of the bass. I love daytons stuff. For what youre talking about, a reference H.O. is probably a good bet. The 12" is available with dual 4 ohm voice coils. I have designed boxes for a few of them and have one in my home theater. They rock for their price andare a legit SQ sub. The titanic isnt bad either but its 4 ohm impedence is tough to power in a car. At least the reference dvc can be wired down to 2ohms. The 12" reference would also favor a smaller enclosure. .9cu ft sealed or so.
That amp is about equivilant to the memphis 1000.d i have and ive figured thats a pretty good power level for the reference.
Not to swing things way off topic but ive also had excellent results with ported boxes for the daytons. I believe porting gets a bad rep because off the shelf boxes are junk. But either way you go i strongly recommend taking a look at the 12" dayton reference H.O.

I've already got the 10" box and it fits nice in the trunk, and the amp. A box for a 12" might be too tall for the space.
Oh, the box is .77 cuft. I don't know why I remembered it as 1 cuft.

Hmm, the RF is DVC, so I'd run it at 2 ohm, and the amp will do 600 w rms at 2 ohm. That sounds like a decent match.
So it would be that setup or the Dayton getting 300 w rms at 4 ohm.

Having a box that is the correct size for the sub is as important as anything IMO. The box is what makes it work. (now i'm not saying to get a junk sub, but a good sub in a bad box is no good.)

Another good sub comparison would be the sensitivity rating ( I think the rockford fosgate has it listed as SPL) the higher the number the more efficiently the sub is able to use the power sent to it which then improves response and sound quality. The Dayton looks to have a higher rating by about 6 points. Thats a pretty big gap

If youre dead set on the box (which i think is sort of a bad thing to be married to given how differently a sub will perform in different boxes), id probably lean toward the fosgate just because you can wire it to 2 ohms.

What do your mfr's recommend for box size? Less that a cubic foot seems quite small even for a 10" sub in a sealed box, but it has been quite a while since I have built any boxes. May be a good idea to go with the sub that requires the least air space. May even put some of the pillow stuffing stuff in there, don't know if it really works or not though.

For the Dayton, I see anything from .27 to 1.0 cuft, and .5 to .75 for the Rockford. My .77 is a close fit.

I guess the amp I have doesn't have the 4 ohm RMS to power the Dayton. The RF seems like a better fit to the amp.

Sorry, I never updated this. I ended up getting the RF sub. It seemed like a better fit for the amp I already had. I had to ramp up the gain on the amp, relative to using it with that old Pioneer sub, but it seems to work well.
But for discussion sake:
My amp doesn't do 1 ohm stable. What would the effect be on that Dayton if I only wired one of the 2 ohm voice coils? Would it only handle half the rated power?

Not good for the sub to wire only one voice coil.
