Radio Option

Post by komobu »

Hi;

I just picked up a 2001 Bonneville SSEi. It has an aftermarket junk radio in it and I would like to go back to the factory one because A, it looks neater and B I can use my steering wheel controls.

Any idea how I can find out what it came with originally? There are three radio options that I am seeing:
AM-mono-FM-stereo-cassette-equalizer (opt U1N)
AM-mono-FM-stereo-CD player-programmable equalizer (opt U1P)
AM-mono-FM-stereo-cassette-CD player-programmable equalizer (opt U1Q)

The vehicle does seem to be fully loaded and it does have a 12 CD changer in the trunk that is OE.

Any help figuring out this radio would be appreciated.

Also; if you have a bonneville with the factory cd changer in the trunk, what type of radio do you have as that is probably most likely what came with it.

I thought I had a copy of my build sheet on my PC but I can't find it to verify, but my 2003 has the CD changer and I believe the radio you want is U1Q (cassette and CD).

The SSEi most likely had the CD and Cassette, option U1Q

You could possibly add on the steering wheel buttons to your aftermarket stereo as well. The stereo shop offered it to me but I figured I could live without.

Also, I believe I still have my factory head unit if you are interested. I'll check when I get home to see if it is still in the garage.

Yes depending on the price, I am interested. As far as configuring the steering wheel remote to the am unit, I did that once before on a 95 park avenue using a Pac Audio set up. It was a pain in the but going through the configuration! Anyways, I really like the factory look. If I put anything aftermarket, it will be a isimple bluetooth add on kit.

All of the head units are interchangeable from 2000-05. Some things you may want to note are:

1. The colour of the buttons changed in later years from gray to black so you may want one to match the gray of all your other buttons.
2. Beginning in 2003 the AM/FM button changed to BAND. Radios with the BAND button are also XM radio capable (with additional hardware installed).
3. The head unit will detect whether the amp installed is Bose, Monsoon or if there isn't an amp installed so you don't need to match based on your configuration.
4. The CD changer will work with any of the head units as it was available as an install kit for the 2000-01 model year vehicle.
5. The SSEi came with AM/FM/CD/Cassette with the exception of the U1N (AM/FM/Cassette) head unit as I recall.

I believe that Andrew (Harofreak00) has several different OEM radios.

I'll take you a pic of mine at lunch. It's an 01 cd/cassette unit. I think the buttons are grey.

The black buttons didn't show up until 2004.

Make sure that you get an SSEi radio if you do get a new OEM unit, I've had all kinds of radios in my car and they sound different depending on if they were meant for the amplified system or not.

It doesn't matter for the Bonneville, if you're using an OEM radio. The head unit detects whether an amp is installed or not and adjusts accordingly. I've been through this extensively looking through both schematics and all dealer part listings. They only list different part numbers based on option of AM/FM/Tape, AM/FM/CD, AM/FM/CD/Cassette and of course model year due to button colour. I installed an SSEi radio in my first (non-amplified) SE with no problem at all. If you're looking for the exact part number from GM listings, it's 25753860 although other part numbers directly interchange with this.

If I recall correctly, for the Bose option in 2000-01 there is one terminal on the back of the radio that is shorted to ground (via the wiring harness). If this is detected the head unit knows to send a low-level output to the audio out lines.

My LeSabre came with just a cassette, however I have radio buttons as well... I was able to upgrade to a cd/cassette and still worked... dont discount the cassette only as the higher up one should be equipped.... im like you and hate how aftermarkets clash with interiors but the stock one in my jeep no longer works and I cant find a working one anymore
