2004 GXP Speakers

Post by 300sflyer »

Hey guys,

I was out driving around yesterday with the stereo on [Monsoon] and a bit louder than normal, and I heard some crackling... I like my music, and I just can't tolerate it! It seems to be coming from the rear deck speakers. I would imagine that after 10 years, they are simply worn out. Can anyone recommend a good replacement? I have not checked the size of them, but from reading on here, I would imagine they are 6x9s?

Thanks

The rear deck speakers are 6×9s and they are actually subwoofers. I can't remember exactly but I believe they are 2 ohm and replacing them with a 4 ohm speaker will cut the volume down quite a bit.

Speakers don't really wear out, but they can deteriorate and often the surrounds will rip and make excess noise when the speakers move. Hop in the trunk and look up at them from the bottom, if you see any rips or tears in the cone and surround or missing pieces of surround they need to be replaced. Another thing to look for is loose speaker grills, the speaker itself loose in the mounting location, and one that has driven me nuts many times over the years is anything hard in the front door pockets will rattle when listening at high volume to a song with heavy bass.

I just crawled into the trunk to have a look. I don't see any rips or tears, and everything seems to be as it should. I guess its possible the crackling was coming from the rear door speakers. Since I am planning to keep the car for a few years, perhaps I should just bit the bullet and change them all out for new ones.

I believe GXPs have 4 ohm 6X9s, it was Bose that has the 2 ohms.

That could be, I don't recall if it was Bose, Monsoon, or both.

They're still garbage no matter what.

I replaced all my Monsoon speakers with Infinity Reference series speakers. Night and day difference. Especially when you have all the windows open, sunroof open, and you're traversing near the century mark. You can actually still hear them...

Did you replace the tweeters in the front doors too? Do you happen to recall all of the speaker sizes? I know the backs are 6x9s, and I believe the front and rear doors are 6.5". Did you put 2/3 ways in the rear deck, or just replace the sub woofers? If you went with 2/3 ways, did you change the amp as well? It would seem silly to replace the subs with 2/3 ways and only feed them with bass. It's difficult to tell how everything is wired up now.

Thanks.

Get a component set for the front so you can replace the awful tweeters as well. Rear doors are 5.25.

There's nothing wrong with using a 2/3 way for the sub spot. In fact, it will be hard/expensive to locate dedicated 6X9 subs.

I know I did the deck, doors, and tweeters.

Since I've had the Caddy almost 5 years, and I did this several years before that while I owned the Bonneville, you'll have to excuse my lapse in memory as to what size the tweeters were.

For you guys that replaced the rear 6x9 subs, with full frequency response 6x9 speakers: How did you power them? Did you replace the factory single channel amplifier as well? Still trying to wrap my head around the best way to do this. My preference is to keep the factory head unit.

Thanks

You don't have to touch the amp, just connect the new speakers and forget about it.

It's my understanding the crossover is in the amp. Aren't you then only getting bass out of the new 6x9's which have their own midrange and tweeters?

Yes, but swapping the amp out while keeping the stock head unit is a much more involved process than just replacing the speakers is. There is nothing wrong with not using the new 6X9s' other drivers.

Just saying all I did was PnP. I'm not an audiophile. Don't care. Just didn't want to listen to distortion from music that matched the noise from driving at elevated volumes. :)

Replaced the subs and both front and rear door speakers with Kicker speakers yesterday. It is sounding much better. :) I would still like to change the tweeters in the front doors. Anyone have a good recommendation that will fit in the stock speaker location?

Thanks

You'll likely need to grab a spare pair of tweeter housings and glue them in. There is no direct drop in. Some form a rigging will have to occur. However, if you got coaxials for the front doors (shame on you :P ) then you might as well just disconnect the tweeters.

The subs on the rear deck are wired in series and controlled by the crossover in the factory amp. The best solution is to replace them with triaxial 6 x 9 and wire them to the rear door speaker outputs from the amp, and leave the rear doors disconnected. You can get a set if JBL GTO 2 component speakers and tweeters for the front doors. They make a big difference. Just wire to the existing wires and they are a direct fit (and do not use the supplied crossover).
