Tire Recommendations.

Just looking for some suggestions on tires. I currently have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. These seem great during the summer but on the odd occasion I have had to drive during the winter they have been less than adequate, at least for our typical winter.

I just got some Pirelli Cinturato P7s for Penny in September. 20k miles later…. They are staggering. Handle nicely in the dry, are literally whisper quiet, and are truly unbelievable in the snow. Never experienced an A/S tire tackle snow like these puppies can.

Put a set of those on the wife's G6 last summer. Like them a lot, but I don't think I'd want to run them during a Michigan winter.

For the snow months, we have a set of Blizzak's on steelies. Car goes anywhere we need it to go with that setup.

P7 A/S + are well liked, as are the PureContact with EcoPlus

If you wanna flash the cash, the best HP All Season on the market AFAIK is the new Michelin Pilot Sport AS3's

If your on a budget, but still want superb All Season performance, General AltiMAX RT43's are a long standing favorite.

For the snow months, we have a set of Blizzak's on steelies. Car goes anywhere we need it to go with that setup.

I have DWS's on three cars including the Impala SS and they would have 0 issues in a Michigan winter as they have 0 issues in a Wisconsin/Illinois winter. Yes a dedicated snow tire is better, but most people aren't ballers with sufficient funds to have multiple sets of wheels shod with dedicated sets of tires. So for an A/S, the DWS does a spectacular job.

Thanks for the recommendations. When the Bonneville was my daily driver I always had dedicated winter tires (usually Michelin X-Ice, but also Blizzak's at one point). I have two sets for my STS since it's my AWD winter car. I won't do two sets for the Bonneville though since I only ever drive it 2 or maybe 3 days the entire winter (and sometimes this is simply to move it for clearing on snow routes). When I have to, I just want something better than the Michelin's that are on it now. Those (despite the claim that they are good all-seasons) perform very poorly on Alberta winter roads. Still giving it some thought but I'm kind of leaning toward the Pirelli's... One of my strongest beliefs has always been to never, ever cheap out on tires. For this reason I really don't mind spending what I need to for what I want.

I had the same issues with Pilot Sport A/S's (although you have the plus version), on the V. For some reason they rate very well, but in any condition other than "dry", much less any winter mess, they just flat out sucked. On wet pavement, I nearly got beat by a fricken Camry accelerating from a stoplight (not a race, just plain acceleration), and in the winter, I *dang* near took out a mini-van just breathing on the throttle. The DWS's fixed that. And they're MUCH less. This of course was before I had the Suburban and was able to put the car away for winter completely.

My Mother raves about the DWS's the past few winters on the Impala (it is the same size wheel/tire combo as the Bonneville GXP).

For some, the issue might be storage, but many tire stores offer that for winter sets now.
Still, the economics can be really good. Besides saving the finish on those nice cast wheels from the ravages of winter, it also saves the treadwear.

Using the Blizzak's (which were bought 2nd hand, and replaced 2 a year) saves the summer tires. We did not have to replace the OE tires until the summer of 2014, on a car bought end of 2009. The still had enough tread, they had just gotten noisy and rough, so it was time to quiet things down a bit. I have set up a system for the winter tires, at which I buy two every other year if needed, otherwise every third year.

Total expenditures over the course of an eight year ownership can't vary that much from the cost of using a single tire year-round, can it?

You're discussing a moot point with me. I HAVE dedicated summer and either A/S or winter tires on separate sets of wheels for MY cars. For my Mother though, I do not. Nor do I care to. For what she needs them for, the DWS's get the job done with ease.

For most, a good A/S is all you need. Depending on climate. Although here in Chicago sometimes even normal cars need snow tires..

Well, I opted for the Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus tires and had them installed today. I must say that first impressions are very good. These are by far the quietest tires I think I've ever owned. Time will tell how hold up. Price was no more than I've paid for other brands/types in the past so I'm happy with cost. I had a road force balance done since I've never had very good luck with a regular balance in the past.

I'm pretty much ready for summer. Only a few other small items... I need to replace my "Tire and Loading" decal in the door jamb because it's peeling. I also have new fuse box covers and labels for under hood and rear that reflect all of the modifications installed. At the end of April it goes to the detailing shop for its annual spring clean and polish.

The road force balance came back as:

LF - 3 Lbs.
RF - 10 Lbs.
LR - 11 Lbs.
RR - 11 Lbs.

I don't know what spec is supposed to be for this application but apparently it's within on all of them.

One of us… One of us… One of ussss. Hahahaha! I hope you like them. As soon as I left the place that put them on for me, I noticed how quiet they were. Especially on the freeways. Such a huge contrast to my worn out and dry rotted BFGs.
