2003 SSEi ECM/PCM question

Post by rynmcdonald »

i have a question regarding the computer on these vehicles. I am swapping out my engine from a donor vehicle and I left the air filter housong open and left the computer exposed. I need to know if it's water tight as it has been this way for about a week. It has rained, sleeted, freezing rain and snowed. I hope it's ok because I don't need another headache with this vehicle.

please let me know.

They are sealed pretty good, there shouldn't be an issue. When you get back to it though just to make sure you can disconnect it and check for water inside the connectors.

Unless you had it disconnected, I wouldn't give it a second thought. My PCM was exposed to nastiness for a couple years when I had the intake installed but no lower splash shield. No issues here!

If you do a 30 minute security relearn it will work.

As long as you have the standard supporting mods and you're certain it isn't a crazy tune, it should benefit you.

How is the security relearn done?

FYI - Engine has those Yella 1.8 roller rocker arms and a 3.6 ZZP pulley

Here are the instructions from the service manual:
1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF, using a master Pass-Key® III key (black).
2. Observe the security telltale. After approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off.
3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
4. Repeat step 1-3 two more times, for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.

Here are instructions written from someone who has done many relearns.
1. Insert black key into ignition and turn to ON. Start 10 minute timer.
2. Wait for the yellow SECURITY light to go out and then turn the key to OFF for 5 seconds.
3. Again, turn ignition to ON. Start 10 minute timer.
4. Wait for the yellow SECURITY light to go out and then turn the key to OFF for 5 seconds.
5. Again, turn ignition to ON. Start 10 minute timer.
6. Wait for the yellow SECURITY light to go out and then turn the key to OFF for 5 seconds.
7. Again, turn ignition to ON and the car should start.

A couple points to mention. Roll the window down and keep all the doors shut during the entire process. Reach through the window opening to turn the key. If you have one, hook up a battery charger and charge it while you do the relearn. With the key on, it can drain the battery. To keep the load off the battery turn off the radio, blower fan and the headlights. Rotate the DELAY knob to OFF every cycle to keep the lights off. Use a stopwatch or timer to keep track of the 10 minute intervals so you can stay on top of it.

What's the master PASS key? is that the cars key to start the vehicle?

By the way.... I like the picture of your avatar. Is that your engine setup? If so, my friend that is receiving this PCM is looking to put headers on the engine

WHere might I find a good set?

Master PASS key is the black key, the valet key is gray. You can't use a valet key for programming.

That picture is about 15 years old from a car I had long ago.

Headers will be on ebay or ZZP.

Ok…. My friend has the PCM in the car and the security light is solid and the car won’t start. He will do the relearning process and I will relay what happens
