Sweet 6000 STE AWD

Post by Arrowhead »

I used to have a pretty much base level 6000 and always coveted the STE's. Then, I bought an 88 Bonneville............ :)

Always loved 6000's. Had a couple.

This one in particular (in the article), has been around for awhile and for sale a couple times. It IS in mint condition, but a little high priced.

I am also a member of A-body.net for my Century that is about to be sold and I have seen both of these cars when they were up for sale... and they went for the asking price too... I know I wouldnt be able to help myself, the car would be a driver that would never see winter. Great cars but I always preferred the 3.3 motor only available in the Buick and Olds... Baby 3.8 with a stronger block! But on my great big list of cars I want the 6000 STE is in the top 25

For me, this is in the same category with the Sy/Ty, TGP, Eurosport VR, SCX W41 and Turbo TA: late 80s GM awesomeness

GM used to do some crazy things! Too bad the Bonneville was never "crazified"

That was is awesome though, seen it a bunch of times now.

There was an article some years back of a V8 rwd 92-95 built off of a caprice frame IIRC. The body was elongated between the front wheel and front door.

Carl, in '87 when the Bonne went FWD, it took a leap forward in terms of the gadgetriness and sportiness. Up till then, 80's Bonneville's were snore inducers. Maybe not quite to the level of the 6000 SE's and STE's at that time, but pretty darn close. Then when they dropped the SSE and later SSEi versions out the door, it came full circle and had every gizmo (sans AWD), that the 6000 STE had.

You can't imagine how many times I nearly called the owner of that one in the article and offered him the cash. But like the article stated, I'd be one of them that enjoyed it for what it is/was and DRIVE it in the winter.

Ugh.. that took some digging. Hotrod.com doesn't host the like I saw back in '06 and internet archive sites don't have all the pictures. But, I found the article.

OK, now that car is just entirely nutty. I wonder what ever happened to it?

Car companies have a history of smashing/crushing/chipping/shredding one-off development vehicles, because the "legal department" hacks earn their pay by shouting and screaming about worst-case liability scenarios. Some awesome, rare, and ultra-cool speciments have wound up as tiny chunks of metal, headed for the recycle refinery.

Is a real bummer.
