4T65 Transmission Help/Question

Post by 1oldman »

The '05 SE I bought in August of 2013 had 58K miles on it. It now has almost 81K miles. The transmission fluid had a nice pink/rose color to it. I had the fluid and filter changed in it as soon as I could. I wasn't too fond of how it shifted, I put some Lucus friction modifier in the transmission. It still didn't seem quite right so the youngest son installed a 4T65 TransGo shift kit in it. It made the transmission shift about 80% better. Since purchase, on two occasions, the transmission did not shift into 1st gear when we came to a stop at a signal. It did down shift into 1st when the gas was "stepped on" to go when the light turned green. The car does not have a SES light.

Question: what would be the best suggested course of action? Try and locate someone with a TechII to see if there are any transmission error codes, install a Transmission Solenoid Kit (http://www.ebay.com/itm/4T65E-Transmiss ... 2c6b3e4f0b), or ??

Thank you - BC

Did you come to a complete stop? The trans won't shift into first unless you coast below 10 mph, if you get what I'm saying.

Did you get it flushed when you had the FF changed? It seems it could be gummed up journals. You could try an ATF cooler. I don't know if it would help but my 01 shifts much better cold

Note if you pull the injectors to obserbe fuel delivery...make sure you leave the plugs in and disconnect the ign. Believe me

Yes, we came to a complete stop. We had to wait for the light to change. - BC

Besides the the times it didn't down shift into 1st, the transmission would be a little “soft” to shift is the only way I know how to describe it. I’m use to the way the 4T60E in the ’92 SSE shifts, and it just didn’t seem to shift as might be described as “confident” without being hard as the 4T60E. Sorry that I can’t describe it better. - BC

I had the Cadillac dealer flush the transmission before I had the 4T65 TransGO shift kit put in and after I put in the Lucas friction modifier. - BC

Well, I'm not a fan of putting "fix-it" from a bottle and I would venture that it'll cause more problems so I'd recommend getting that stuff out of there. Best course of action would be to monitor it would either a Tech2 or something like Torque Pro with an android OS. The only guess I would have is the solenoid sticking but I'm not well versed on automatics.

Sounds like solenoid to me. They don't cost much but need to drop subframe & pull side cover to trans.

I typically don’t use anything but Lucas, when I do use something. I’ve only used it twice before and had very good results with it. Most all the Lucas should be out as the Cadillac dealer flushed the system and a TransGo Shift kit installed after the Lucas was used. – BC

As I “comprehend” it, the 4T65E has “quirks” not imparted to the 4T60E. I loved the way the 4T60E shifted in the old ’92 SSE.
IIRC, someone on the FORUM did install new solenoid(s) in a 2000+ without having to drop the subframe, but I cannot find the post.

Is this the kit I should have installed if I go with solenoid(s)?

Yes the lower left two are the shift solenoids. Good price for all that as if your in there u want to Change PCS too which I think is what they are calling the epc. I think that other tcc cost that much alone at Advanced auto.

Any comments? I know it's an Impala, not a Bonneville, but how close does it come to applying to a Bonneville?

The "sanitation" of the tech drives me crazy. He should have cleaned the outside of the transmission case before removing it. I also think he should have put on clean gloves before handling/installing the new parts. The video's are extremely informative to someone like me that has never done this before.

Thanks - BC

Unfortunately, it won't be me doing it. I'm lucky to get in and out of a car, much less work on one. My #1 mechanic got himself a full time job at a machine shop with benefits working 50 hours a week. I'll have to corner him when he's not tired and in a "good mood" - LOL! I watch the videos to be educated, or at least a semblance of it, when the car is worked on. - BC
