LIM & upper gasket replacement do I have it right? Help

Post by MrJiggy716 »

Sadly I think the time has come to replace the LIM and upper gaskets on my 2000 SLE. I'm losing coolant, though no milky oil? I just want to make sure I have all the right parts and or parts you recommend tips and advice. As always thank you guys so much. Heres what I was looking at:

Lower:

Upper:

Elbows:

Anything else? Thanks again.

If you're losing coolant but have no milky oil, that's the sign of an early failure in the upper manifold. Nonetheless, it looks like you have all the right parts.

I am just getting back to doing the LIM & UIM on my non-SC 2000 sle after a long round of health problems and the car sitting in a disassembled state for 10months. A few things I have decided to do are: both heater hoses, new valve cover gaskets and 02 sensor. (while they're so accessible) All three of my fuel and vapor lines were almost rusted through . (approx. $400 from our buddy, Mr. Goodwrench ! ) All new copper nickel brake lines. My state really puts corrosive stuff on the roads in Winter !! Also putting on a new alt. mount/tensioner (OEM). and finally, the vacuum "harness" that runs from evap. solenoid to fuel press. reg. to fitting on the throttle body. Was very brittle and broke in 2 places. I'd recommend plugs and wires too if yours is due for some. Some old, foam couch cushions across the front of the car and on top of the engine make it easier to lay down and get in close to stuff like the heater core nipples on the firewall and doing plugs/wires/o2 sensor etc. Have fun. Edit: I was told that the GM LIM gaskets are better, so I got those. They're cheaper than FelPro ones too. Both are probably fine, though.

Arrow sorry to hear about your health problems but glad both you and the Bonnie are getting back on your feet! Those AC Delcos are cheaper yes, but they are still the same plastic as OEM. Not metal like the ones I posted, so your taking a chance on them rotting through again. Id rather pay a bit more and never have to worry about it again. The Upper Gasket I posted is improved as well with heat stabilized nylon. Also this models EGR port sleeved with metal to help prevent failure. As far as everything else goes I'm up to snuff new plugs wires etc...

No, not the one I linked, it's the Delco alum. one.(quite heavy) Now after doing some reading up on the gasket that comes with the UIMs ,(I got the APN version) I think I'll do what some reviewers have done and go with a FelPro UIM gasket set. I DO NOT want to have to mess with again any time soon !

I am relying on the info posted in this thread for the most part. It's possible that some things have changed somewhat since it was first posted..............

No need to do the water pump. Don't fix what's not broke applies to this situation.

So shes been sipping coolant like a champ oil is not milky... Today smelled burning oil checked the level about a quart low and dark just had a full synthetic change under 8 k ago. Took off the shield and discovered a nice stream coming from under the upper enough for it to actually pool and on the sides. No noise no problems .... Ryan suggested it may be the valve covers. So might as well add that to the list.

Oil is definitely valve cover gaskets, no oil runs through the LIM or UIM :)

As we talked about yesterday, nothing to worry about other then being annoying and dirty  the coolant loss could be failing UIM or LIM gaskets, either way they both need replaced.

Sounds like you got some work ahead of you. But it's all relatively simple, and cheap to do yourself. VC gaskets are very cheap.
