exhaust rattle

Post by spoiledred94 »

I/ve had an exhaust rattle since I got the car two years ago. It happens all the time now except sometimes it won't do it. I am having a hard tome tracking it down. The CAT has been replaced.

Note if you pull the injectors to obserbe fuel delivery...make sure you leave the plugs in and disconnect the ign. Believe me

I had a similar problem, but on an older '87 or '92 (can't remember) but it was a shield protecting the body from heat from the cat I think or some part of the exhaust system. Seems like it got worse when hot. That may explain why you can't track it down. Not sure if it applys but worth a look. swampy

Heat shield, cat again, or downpipe.

I just don't want to be under my car running on Jack stands tracking a rattle. Any way I did manage to locate it to be in the down pipe area when I was under it running but it fades as it gets warm. Unless you drive it then it comes back..

Dont know if this will help but i know that Pontiac cats when they go bad have something about them that makes a rattle noise. My 2000 ssei had a rattle under it and I talked with a buddy of mine who does exhaust and he said it is pretty common. I replaced my cats and havnt had the noise since

I have replaced the CAT with a magna flow high flow CAT and that did nothing to the tune of $125

I would say check heat shields and then the downpipe connection.

The '92 I have got an exhaust rattle after a shop worked on it. I had two shops look at it and said nothing wrong. I was rooting around under it one day and the toe of my shoe happened to touch a small heat shield by the cat. The sheet metal "threads" had been stripped by some ape working on the car jerking on the exhaust. I put in a larger self tapping sheet metal fastener, end of rattle. Took me over two years to find that one. Hope you fix yours sooner. - BC

Thx. I will get back under there when it cools down some. 90+ degrees F makes for under car work miserable. BC did you have your 92 on and running when you found the rattle?

No, I did not. The toe of the shoe moved the shield in just the right way that made it obvious it was loose. I don't have any idea why no one, including me, found it sooner. - BC
