1993 SSE S/C Power Steering Pump replacement

Post by Griff951 »

Hello,
I could not seem to find information in other posts. I am replacing the Power Steering pump on my 1993 SSE Supercharged and have the following questions;
1. Does this pump need to be taken out through the top of the engine? It looks like there is no space to drop out the bottom between the other engine components(pulleys) on the bottom and the frame rail. If it comes out the top the cast alternator and tensioner bracket needs be removed and the lower bolt on this is almost impossible to access, and tips on how to get this out?
2. Are the any suggestion how to disconnect the fluid lines before removal ? Again access is very limited and I can't a line wrench in that area.
Thanks in advance for your help!!!!

I think the pump should be able to come out the side through the wheel well. You'll have to remove part of the liner to get access to it. I've always found it a tight fit to get access to the pressure line and return line to remove them.

Otherwise, it'll have to come out the top. You might need a few 'deep well' sockets to get some of the bolts out.

It might be easier to access the hose connections if you unbolt the pump from the block/accessory bracket so it is hanging by the hoses.

When I did mine I disconected the hoses from under the car.I took mine out through the wheel well.I also took off the oil pressure sensor to protect it from damage,you will be right near it and it only takes a small impact to screw the sensor up.The pump will only come out after you find the right angle to fit it out,the space is very tight.Remember the position it came out in so when you put the new one in it will be easier.This is not a fun job,it can be done,also be sure to check your high pressure line for leaks.It is very common for that line to leak,most pumps you buy suggest a new one to go in with the pump.
