MAF sensor tap test failure

Post by MrPOPE »

My 03 Bonne SE is currently undrivable. It is hesitating badly and cutting off once it gets warm.

I bought a aftermarker MAF sensor in march and it's not throwing any codes. So I never suspected it. So i heard of the TAP TEST... where you tap the MAF with a screwdriver to see if the engine rpm changes.

Well i tapped my new MAF and the car cut right off. Started it again...tapped it again.. it shuddered badly but stayed running. Tapped it again after it smoothed out... Car shut right off. Btw shimmying the MAF wires had no effect on the engine.

Is it safe to safe this :NEW: Aftermarket Ebay MAF is a defective POS?

Definitely sounds like a bad one. We have found that more often then not a used OEM MAF sensor is more reliable then a new one from the parts store, I would check local salvage yards.

well my 3rd aftermarket MAF i just got today is defective. its even worse that the last one. This MAF shut the car down at idle once warm. and it wont hold idle after re-start.

So i just uplugged the MAF altogether. Car now rides like normal. DO NO BUY AFTERMARKET MAF'S

The original MAF sensor on my 2003 SLE recently failed, as engine was stalling out on me and eventually set code P0440. Just pushing down slightly on the sensor from the top would cause the engine to stall. I replaced it with a Cardone Select part # 8650015 (the most expensive that the parts store sold), I see Rock Auto sells it for $125. The engine runs very well and tranny shifts better than it did with the failing factory sensor. I only have 1000 miles on it since then, but so far this one has been good for me.

Yeah i am going to have to plop down the cash for a top of the line MAF part. I have changed every single thing on this engine sans the injectors... car was stilling running horrible.... disconnected in the MAF.. car runs like a dream now. Full Power .. smooth shifting.. jumps off the line like a cat. no problems.

Shoot Harofreak00 a PM. He should have a few good MAF's laying around that he can get to you for a lot cheaper than a parts store delco would cost.
