Common wire, ground, plug, or module - issues on 02 SE.

Post by crash93ssei »

Random electrical issue with the 02 SE going on, no pattern related to time, temperature, or anything else.

On the instrument cluster, the speedometer, tach, and all warning lights drop dead as well as odometer and trip odometer stop dead, but back lighting still works as well as fuel, temp, oil psi, and volts still work. When this happens, cruise control also dies and blinkers stop working. Horn, headlights (bright and dim), and wipers continue to work.

I am thinking I have a bad common ground or a corroded plug or just a bad module somewhere. Anyone have a clue where to start? I pretty much plan to remove the entire dash to find the issue if I have to.

This is ground 200. The cruise shows on ground 106.

Does it say at all where these grounds are located?

This is all I have for now. Looks as if 16 for ground 200 may be the one by the driver's kick panel. 18 for g106 looks to be right by the cruise module.

The gauges are either losing voltage or not getting a signal from the data bus. The control signals dor the gauges come from the PCM. Check the connectors on the PCM, maybe unseat and reseat them a few times to clean them and see if that helps. Losing voltage is less likely as all the gauges would die, but check the IP fuse in the rear fuse block and make sure it is in tight and not corroded. Lastly, you will have to remove the dash trim cover, and remove the IP cluster (there are only 5 snap clips holding it in, no screws) and check the 2 connectors on the back and behind it to make sure they are clean and will seat properly when you re-install the cluster. The fact that the cruise and trun signals stop also suggests connectors at the PCM or the PCM is going bad.

The engine is currently blown in this car so I haven't been driving it for a few months (awaiting transplant) but I did take the dash out to troubleshoot a blower air flow issue and found some of the wiring behind the stereo was all chewed up and could have been shorting out, it hasn't had the issue since then but it was only on the road for a month or two after that got sorted out. The wiring harness was cut when someone went to install an aftermarket stereo, you have to cut the back of the dash out to make room and they were careless when cutting which hacked into the harness.

It sounds more like a voltage leak from your alternator. A diode is probably bad in the regulator. Take the alternator & have it tested & repaired.

If that was the case there would be more things effected then what was, I could drive it 500 miles straight and one way it would work perfect the whole way, on the way home it would work on and off then not work for 200 miles straight, voltage never changed.

Thanks Crash93ssei. I'll check behind the dash and radio. AND no it cant be alternator related. I just drove 485 miles straight on one tank of gas 8hrs and no problems with voltage. Used to be after 20 mins they would start working so I hoped they would have kicked back in but no luck.

Also check the ground connection from the PCM. It is under the ignition module.

So here's where I'm at. Still have the same problem. I checked all the grounds and all seemed good. I bought and replaced the body control module under the passenger side dash panel. sstill have the same problem after this so after replacing the body control modular and checking all the grounds the problem still exist. does anyone have any clues on where to try next? I was thinking that maybe the ignition switch needed to be replaced. heard that maybe power wasn't going to both sides of the switch and that could be my issue.

Finally found and fixed this problem. After replacing dash cluster pcm and body control module it was the relay in fuse box under ther seat. Inj3 relay replaced and all works again. Right down to cruise control and tire pressure rest.

Good to know! For all I know that could have been my issue as well, it only drove for a few months after I ripped the dash out and repaired the harness. Now I have a completely different body harness and interior in the car complete with HUD swap and electronic climate control swap.
