01 SSEI brake upgrade??

Post by blackbrandi »

I have a 01 bonneville ssei. I'm looking to upgrade the brakes. I don't want to change out all the lines or master cylinder. I was thinking I could just go to the part store and pick up some 04 GXP brake calipers since they are dual piston, and the caliper bracket. Does any one know if this is a good bolt on option for me to upgrade cheap? Also what can I do for the rear brakes?

For GXP brakes you will need the calipers, caliper brackets, bolts for those brackets, brake lines for the calipers, and the rotors for the front.

IIRC the brake lines are the same? Not 100%. It is always a good idea to upgrade the rubber lines though, especially after 13 years of brake fluid.

Brake lines are different, they are bent different at the caliper.

Good to know. Is there any reason that the SSEi ones won't work? Could just be a GM packaging or assembly reason...

Are the GXP brakes worth the trouble? Is there a noticeable difference in stopping power? I'm pretty sure my SSEI is every bit as heavy as my GMC Sierra with less brakes and more top speed.

If you can get them on the cheap, sure. The rears are practically free, all it is is the caliper bracket and rotor. If you don't find a steal on the gxp fronts, you can still get good braking.from some more aggressive pads and good rotors.

So you just get the bracket and larger rotor/pads for the rear. That doesn't sound too bad. I have family that works for a GM stealership so I get factory parts pretty cheap. What year GXP brakes work?

Any year Bonneville gxp. The bracket and rotor are the only difference in rear. The dust shield needs a little rework with a deadblow hammer.

Don't even try it with stock ssei hoses. I rubbed through both of mine after 5 days lol. Get custom ss lines made zzp has been on backorder for 3 months recently. Do the gxp hoses actually work without rubbing?

I got my calipers on the cheap, but I got the lines and rebuild kit very cheap off of rock auto. I wanna say I paid about $30 for both front lines, banjo washer, bolts, gaskets. Brand new calipers from rock auto are running about $50 plus core now.
