Steering wheel
Hey guys I have a question. I noticed that my steering wheel does not lock in place when the car is off, I know I read something that is a common break on our cars that needs to be replaced but I do not remember when or where I read it so I was wondering if you guys could offer some help.

Re: Steering wheel
It's common to get clunks while turning. I've never heard of issues with the steering lock.
If I remove the key and attempt to turn the wheel more than an inch or two, it locks right up.

Re: Steering wheel
My jeep takes a few inches to get it to lock, and its one of the nicest shape jeeps with the tightest steering ive ever seen. Try wiggling it back and forth as much as possible, seriously, then it should lock.
1995 Jeep Cherokee Country- 200,XXX miles and running strong. 4.0L paired with a 5 speed manual. 4.5" long arm lift with 32" tires and regeared to make up for power. Best of all, shes a fire engine red!

Re: Steering wheel
no it doesn't lock at all I am able to move the wheels a good bit (with alotta force) but my steering wheel never locks up at all and that is what also maybe causing my airbag light to be on.

Re: Steering wheel
Just assumed it wasn't designed to do that any more. No mention in owners manual. Maybe I haven't turned it far enough yet.

Re: Steering wheel
I don't recall either of mine locking, never cared enough to look into it.

Re: Steering wheel
The reason why I'm asking because I read somewhere that with the air bag light on the reason maybe a sensor in the steering wheel but I'm just tossing around this idea I really don't want to get charged 90 dollars to have the light checked!

Re: Steering wheel
When the airbag light is on, it could be any one of several electrical connections in the SIR system.samples08 wrote:The reason why I'm asking because I read somewhere that with the air bag light on the reason maybe a sensor in the steering wheel but I'm just tossing around this idea I really don't want to get charged 90 dollars to have the light checked!
The only true way to start to diag. the light, is to have the code read, and go from there.
You just can't assume something, or you'll just be chasing your tail.
I have found, that in a lot of cases, fretting corrosion has been the root cause to many air bag lights.
