need guildance on what to get for tranny

Post by david »

So I decided to fix my tranny with no od. So I know to buy the 4th gear hub and clutches. Could anyone who have done this give me some direction on were to buy the clutches and what gaskets. Also did you use grease to hold the balls in the valvebody when putting it back together? Planning on doing it in the car. Friend of mine has a car lift. 2000 Sle 3800 Thanks to all

You don't need the clutches.

Just the hardened 4th hub, channel plate gaskets, possibly the side cover gasket (they like to tear), and some trans assembly lube.

How old is the PCS? Now is a good time to change that out too. Also the 4th clutch will be off for this job and is really really easy to tell if those at least should be replaced (they are usually the first to go, the steels will have leopard spotting to signify overheating, new parts are updated to address the issue). Or if the fluid smells burnt or is brownish is a good indicator that clutches are wearing out and they need to be checked.

Online, rockauto or makcotransmission sells individual components. If you have a local trans shop they may also sell parts or direct you to a supplier that can.

If it was my car I would be tearing everything down and at least checking it out while I'm already in there: Replacing all the seals especially the ones in the clutch apply pistons. It's not an easy task, will require special tools to be bought or made, a clean work place, a bench to work at, a stand, etc... Again not really required to fix the issue, but a fresh set of seals and replacement clutches as needed would make the trans last a lot longer.

I would give Dave at Triple Edge Performance a Call.

I would replace all solenoids in the VB and CP,

No Check balls will fall out if you remove the VB and CP as all one unit.

As Andrew said above, you will need the Hardened 4th, and CP gaskets. Usually the side cover gasket is reusable if your careful with it. Plus its like $60 bucks
