Instrument Cluster Removal

Post by Bigerik »

I need to get my cluster sent in to be overhauled. Just wondering what is involved with removing it. Is it safe for the worlds worst mechanic to try it? :)

Also, is there any difference between the GXP cluster and the regular one? Just gauge colours?
Thanks

No wrenches involved, Erik. Find the instructions for removing the bezel, then push the gold tabs over on the cluster and it should pop right out. Some pulling while pushing the tabs is required.

Very simple. First remove the dash bezel.
hawkjet wrote:First remove the fascia from around the instrument panel and radio.

There are two plastic rivets going up into the fascia above the instrument cluster. Press the center of the rivets upward (pics 1 & 2) and then carefully pry the rivets out (pic 3).

Image

Pry the trim ring off the ignition switch (pic 4) notice I put electrical tape around the screwdriver blade to avoid marring the trim. Then pull out the 'cubby hole' on the left of the wheel (pic 5). Tilt the wheel all the way down and pull the panel off the dash (pic 6).

Image

Reach behind the right side and disconnect the connector(pic7). Carefully tweek the panel to get it around the wheel and out of the way.
Then tilt the column all the way up, release the 5 clips that hold the cluster in place, angle the bottom of the cluster towards you to get it over the column, then tilt the cluster all the way down, and remove the cluster. You might be able to get by without moving the column, but its easier if you do.

The SLE cluster might work for you, but the SE or SSEi will not.

On step 5, we have the HUD switches which removal would be similar, just that you'll need to disconnect the pigtail going to them.

Thanks guys!
Is there a special tool to push up the rivets cleanly? Or is it just a metal rod you used to push them up?

Sadly, no HUD here. Fully loaded with everything, except the HUD. :(

Anything will work on the pins.

I thought HUD became standard again on the GXP's? I know it was an option on the 03 SSEi. Interesting. All the GXP's I've ever seen have had HUD.

No, now that he mentions it, I've seen a few on AutoTrader without HUD.

I think Andrew actually had a HUD for sale at one time, but I think you'd need to replace at least the upper dash panel. Not sure about the harness, either. Andrew?

BTW, I don't think HUD was ever standard equipment on any car. Just one of those subjective options, like a sunroof, heated seats and CDX/XM that can either keep the cost down or make it go up. They sure add to the experience, though. :)

GXPete, from 92-02 it was standard on SSEi's. That I know almost 100%.

I think 00Beast is correct, but I can't prove it except to go to Edmunds and use their appraise your car button. :)

Your are right, Ed. I just checked the '02 Bonne brochure book I still have from when I had the '02 SSEi and sure enough, HUD was standard. Forgot that.

When removing the front fascia, were there any clips or did it just slip off after removing the front fascia screws/rivets, unplugging and the DIC control panel and disconnecting the HUD buttons? I just don't want to break any clips taking it out and then when putting it back in, it doesn't stay in place.

Thanks,
John
