Post by bowms76 »

Does anyone have a step by step guide on replacing the front hub assembly for a 2001 Bonneville SSE?

Loosen up the lug nuts on that wheel, jack the car up, support it, remove the wheel.
Stick a screwdriver in the fins of the brake rotor so that it jams up against the brake caliper bracket, loosen the axle nut, 34 mm.
15 mm to remove the caliper and caliper bracket, support it so that it doesn't fall. A heavy duty zip tie to the coil spring usually works.
Slide the brake rotor off the studs / wheel hub.
1/2 and various extensions on the back side of the knuckle to remove the three bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle, helps to turn the wheel to get access to it. Once all three are out, sometimes the hub falls out, sometimes you have to give it a few swats with a hammer.
When the hub is loose enough to remove, push in the axle a little bit to allow the ABS wire connector to come out.
Reverse the steps to install. Not really a terribly hard job, just take your time if you haven't done one before. The axle nut is often times on pretty tight, especially if never removed before on a high mileage car. I can have one done in a half hour now from the time I walk outside until I am back in the house

Another method to loosening the axle nut is to remove the wheel and put on the spare if you have it. The hole in spare will let you remove the axle nut with easy if you have a long breaker bar. Make sure you engage the E-brake though!

It's not a hard job, just time consuming.

Never thought about the spare. Even though is consist of jacking the car up and down one more time, you can use the weight of the car for leverage, instead of a screw driver in the brake rotor. Less chance of breaking something.
