Seatbelt and door bonger driving me mad!!!!
Seatbelt and door bonger driving me mad!!!!
I'm sick to death of this seatbelt that sinches me up every time I get on the throttle, brake, or corner. How do I make it stop? I just want a normal ratcheting seatbelt that isn't convinced that its going to die every time I pull away from a stop sign.
Also I just discovered that GM, in their infinite wisdom, wired the door bonger into the drivers side speaker. Is there any way to shut this thing up short of disconnecting the speaker?

Re: Seatbelt and door bonger driving me mad!!!!
I'm going to take a shot in the dark here, as I often have this problem in the backseats of cars, being larger in circumference than the average human being myself: Are you a bigger person? If so, you might need to talk to your dealer about getting a small seatbelt extender. If not, then there's something wrong with the mechanism.
What is it bonging about? Usually it happens a couple times at startup, and when you open the door with the key in or lights on. Is it more than that?

Re: Seatbelt and door bonger driving me mad!!!!
It's been awhile since I've had mine, but I thought you were able to turn down the volume of the chime in the D.I.C. But it's not like a volume knob. It's usually a low, medium, and high setting. If not, you may be able to turn it down with a T2 (Again, I never sought out this in mine, so I'd have to hook up to another Bonneville and see what personalization features are available to be changed).
Seat belt, I can't help you. If it's overly sensitive, then it may be the mechanism itself and the only option is replacement. It's a mechanical springlike mechanism (best way to describe it), and there are no electronic adjustments that can be made.

My guess is he leaves the seatbelt off and it dings while he's driving maybe? But I second replacing the belt if it's too sensitive.

Hmm I'll see about turning down the chime but I haven't found anything in the dic as of yet.
The seatbelt is obviously one of the more modern seatbelts that tightens up before an impact but this one takes it way too far. I'm a skinny guy 6'3" 180lbs and it will tighten up on me if I'm driving like a 23 year old and when i go back to normal driving I have to suck in my gut to let the rather loosen up.
To be more specific its the lap strap that tightens up and the shoulder strap will lock until I resume normal driving

Look through your owners manual for how to turn down the chime, it is one of those special options in the DIC that isn't directly displayed. My 03 SSEi was stupid loud when I got it too, enough to flat out piss me off every time I got in the car, I changed that real quick!

and LOUD will appear on the radio display. To change

replacing it with a factory radio or chime will disable

Yes, but that is all a mechanical "intertia" spring mechanism. If it is too sensitive for you, then it is in the mechanism.

Really? An inertia mechanism will ratchet the seatbelt but its not going to actively tighten the seatbelt up around me. Only electric seatbelts do that.

Im the same size as you and always had problems with all cars seat belts tightening up on me. My e250 work van also my 74 challenger and Intrepid the only one that doesnt is my sons 2003 Gtp. I think the only thing electrical is the sensor for warning you your not wearing seat belt. But then again Im no pro on cars.

From what I recall, there was no actuation mechanism on our seat belts that did any engagement. However, these are the seat mounted versions, and I've only had but a handful of them that I've worked on, so perhaps there is.
There are other electronics that work in the system that monitor status (I.E. the warning indicator, as well as working with the SRS system in some applications).

Re: Seatbelt and door bonger driving me mad!!!!
Looked it up in SI last night, no mention of any electronics/electrics other than in the buckle with the seatbelt reminder. The spool, retractor, and tensioner are all mechanical.
In order to test and diagnose it, one step noted 16mph as the point to break hard to test engagement of the mechanism. Granted that doesn't tell much if you "feel" it's too quick to engage, but if it's engaging and lower speeds and sudden change in load (I.E. at less than 16mph), that might be indicative that something isn't right.

Re: Seatbelt and door bonger driving me mad!!!!
Have you considered the fact that the g force acting on your body, as you accelerate, pushes your body further into the seat. Thus causing the mechanical retractor to take up the slack.
