WOT stumble

Post by Abbby »

I have two 2003 Bonnevilles and they both do this. If I floor it at around 60mph once the RPM's get to about 4000 the engine starts stumbling/surging. They both run great and get good gas mileage.

No codes. Not sure if it is misfire but definetly something not right. Kind of like bumping up against a rev limiter.

This is in the common problems doc:

Loss of power in higher RPM’s
Problem: The car has a loss of power at higher RPM’s, stalls and chokes out when giving throttle.
Solution: The catalytic converter is plugged, not allowing the exhaust gases to release from the engine. Replacement cat is required.
Estimated Cost: $50-70 for aftermarket cat (OEM cats cost hundreds), $20-50 for installation labor.

May also want to check for vacuum leaks, and fuel pressure at the higher rpms. If you haven't lately, it wouldn't hurt to replace the fuel filter.

Do you know if the $50-70 aftermarket is a universal one or bolt up? Where would one buy this. Be nice to have bolt up versus universal that needs modification to fit.
