Smaller K & N Filter needed

Post by ytd1861 »

I installed my FWI today, but on my 03 Bonneville SE, the stock 9" cone air filter that came with the Intense kit is too long. Anyone else have this issue and go with a smaller length K&N?

What size did you use? (installing thru the headlight... I Do not want to bother with fender well removal)

This is what I installed..... http://intense-racing.com/Merchant2/mer ... _Induction

If you have the means I would suggest trying to do the fenderwell method. Much easier. You can manipulate it easier.

I don't have a close source for the tabs that are very prone to breaking when removing the fender, and the other issue is the apartment complex I live at has a strict tolerance of no working on cars. I was able to do about 3 hours work at a friends place today but its very rare to be able to do that.

I wish Volant made a box for my car. I've had 2 of theirs on GMC/Chevy trucks and they were fantastic and true "cold air" boxes.

Breaking tabs in the fender?

For what it's worth, you'll only break them once.
I have a Bonneville, it's white and N/A!

I'm going to get a shorter and a bit thinner filter then run it to behind the headlight. I found one at Summit which will fit just fine.

What size inlet on the filter? I run a 3.5" inlet 7" cone K&N RU-3130. my local Advance auto parts store stocks them ~$35

The 9" will fit in there, it won't move around in there, but it will fit with some finagling. I almost preferred to have the 9" in there because of that.

Shane "RedZMonte":

Same 3.5" inlet as yours but only 5" tall. Should be easier to get it in and out for cleaning. My car won't ever be used for racing on the strip, its just a daily driver and I'm adding some mods for more play around power and some MPG if produced

SSEiMan01: You obviously have more patience than me. I've got a temper and if things don't bolt-up pretty quick, I get wound pretty tight. A smaller, easier to install filter is just what I need. ha ha

my filter comes in and out very easy and has room to spare, lower the front splash guard on from the lower part of the bumper and its out.. 5 min job to R&R.

Any autoparts store will let you work on cars there as long as you buy from them. :btruestory:

Depends on what you need to do... There could always be a potential issue of liability. We change batteries and wiper blades in our parking lot for customers, but if they need some major job done some places might be leery.

But yeah, an intake, I wouldn't think that would be a problem. I put mine (on the GXP) on in the school parking garage.

I'm just going with the smaller size filter. It should make removal later to clean it a bit simpler too. This isn't anything to get worked up about in my book...so long as it works, I'm good with it.
