97 SSEi stalling

Post by ramick2005 »

My recently purchased 97 SSEi stalled on the way to work today. The PO had informed me that this happens occasionally and it will start up after you wait a few minutes which it did. I think it was electrical because when it died a voltage warning light came on in the dash. The battery and alternator are new less than 1000 miles on them. Does this problem sound familiar to anyone?

How much gas is in your tank? This is a serious question.

Your battery warning light would come on if your engine died with the key in the on position. Reason being that it's not detecting any charge and it's trying to alert you to that fact.

When mine did this, it was a broken wire to the cam sensor.

I have just under half a tank, and this has been happening for a while according to the PO.

After it stalled out, did you turn the key off and back on right away? If so, did you notice if the fuel pump primed at the key on position?

When it stalled, did it just die immediately, or did it lose power and then die?

The reason I asked about the fuel is that some of these beasts were picky about their fuel level and if you got below a certain point and made a right hand turn, it'd slosh fuel away from the pump and stall out.

Sounds like a Crank Position Sensor could be wonky as well.

-No I didn't turn the key until I came to a stop and I didn't notice the fuel pump making any noise. Although a few days ago I heard a rattle/buzzing coming from the rear of the car, bad fuel pump maybe?

When it stalled, did it just die immediately, or did it lose power and then die?

-I think it kind of shudderd then died but I'm not sure.

The reason I asked about the fuel is that some of these beasts were picky about their fuel level and if you got below a certain point and made a right hand turn, it'd slosh fuel away from the pump and stall out.

- the road I was on is very straight.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I would verify that the fuel pump is functioning properly. Ideally, you would have a fuel pressure gauge hooked up so that you could monitor the fuel pressure.

I had Autozone run the code and it came up as
-Failed input speed sensor
-open or short circuit condition
-corroded or moisture in connector.

I asked the clerk to look on up for me and he said they couldn't get one. Has anybody ever had this happen to them. Also could this cause my stalling issue?

wait a second, what code? An ISS sensor shouldn't cause your car to stall out and not restart.

There was also a check engine light on so I went and had I checked. It came up as an ISS and I did not know if an ISS sensor could cause stalling or not, now I do.
