Hooray, I found out where the metal chunky thing cam from! And I get to send my crank in to the machine shop now! Hopefully they only want to do the mains...
I'll get a few pictures up later.
Now the debate is, to take it back to the machine shop that didn't want to hone the cylinders last year, or hone them myself and replace the rings, or find a new shop to bore it out and replace the pistons with something even more fun...

At the very least have the Mains Line Honed, and maybe punch it out if its needed... Most 3800's are pretty good about cylinder bore wear, you may be able to hone it out and call it good..
I had fun learning that I need to use a set of calipers to set up my new dial bore gauge. Fun because it's on the other side of the state from where I'm working on the car .
I can tell that my cylinders have less than .0005" of wear top to bottom and less than .0005" out of round. And the cylinders are all within .001" of each other from best to worst. Until I set my gauge to 3.800" however I won't know the true reading. I'll get to it tomorrow. But with any luck, I can get away with a hone and not spend another $400 on pistons and $200 on machining.

I'm disappointed that the new machine shop did not call me today (about the block). I hate finding out that if I want something done I have to do (all) the work. I know it's the 'busy season', but honestly when I dropped the block off Saturday if it was that 'busy' they would have been there in force and not just a single person...

Block is good, only needs a hone. I'm having them install the cam bearings and freeze plugs too. Should be done tomorrow! Also waiting to see if the crank comes back tomorrow as well (took it to a race shop near dearborn).

Heads (PAC 105# valve springs), alternator, timing cover/water pump and starter motor are done. Got the valve covers cleaned, the SC cleaned, just need paint. No more metallic red for this engine.

45 minutes of work and $35 got me a complete rebuilt starter motor. One of those things that looks more complicated than it really is.
Heads with the new valve springs installed:
Can't wait to order the new bearings, but I have to know how much they took off the crank first! Also, the guy at the machine shop may be able to beat ZZPs price on Hastings piston rings.

As long as the manifold flange stays sealed it should. The engine was painted with body paint before, it didn't let go or burn, so maybe this will work.

Wow! I may just have to paint my valve covers white instead of black now... Good work!!!
