Bent my Rim

Post by StreetƐgl-o21 »

Okay so i bent one of my stock rims, I was just going to rotate my tires, But then decided instead of waiting until late this year to upgrade my wheels i may as well do it During income tax season. Being that the list of rim makers is so vast i wont ask which people prefer as far as style but As far as durability are there any companies that stand out?

Not only that I'm not sure what the max rim size is for the Bonnie("16 option) I've looked and been given "20's as a suggestion any ideas?

20 is about the safe max. The general preference is 18's, as it still helps iron out some of the bumps.

Some have done 22's, but you usually have to make them fit, and even then it isn't much fun.

Honestly, if you don't want really big wheels, 17" stock chrome wheels from the 2000-2005 Bonneville look great on the '92-'99 model years. If you want a little bigger, look into some GXP wheels ;)

Hmm yeah i was thinking about the whole handling and response aspect when upgrading to larger rims/tires. I was hoping there was some way to absorb the extra shock i may feel with a little suspension upgrade maybe, nothing extreme like a lift kit or anything. Just better Struts or something but do you know if the shock/bumps you feel are going to be substantial or just a slight bit different?

I'm not sure but i really am leaning toward 20s though but I'm going to check out the GXP's and see if they will do =o i was looking a couple online to get a feel for what i would like: something like these:

or

Just some concepts Since Im repainting her black i kind of like the Chrome/black finish

I think on that bodystyle the findings were that 18s were fine, 20s would rub, and 22s were just a handful. IMO, the 18" GXPs look dead sexy on that bodystyle.

Hmm I'd hate to have rubbing issues, but 20's are calling me so badly. Lmao but maybe I'll still with some aftermarket 18's I like the GXP's but keeping them clean of brake dust is a chore. My buddy has a gxp and his rims have to be cleaned or the dust cooks onto them.

That's more because of the factory brake setup than the wheels on the GXP. The OEM Semi-Metallic pads are god-awful. Ceramics are MUCH better.

No offense, but your Bonnie has 271k miles. Does it really make sense to throw a few grand in wheels and tires on a car that is worth less that what the wheels and tires cost? Again, no offense just doesn't make sense to me.

While I agree, at least it's a common wheel bolt pattern and wheels are easy enough to remove...

No offense taken at all. She was very well taken care of by my grandfather she runs more like she has 170k on her. In the short year since he's given her to me i've done more damage to the car than he has in the previous 18 years. But the car has sentimental value more than anything an i plan to keep her if i can till she hits the 500k mark so why not look good while doing it? Long as she runs i'm happy. But there is a flaw in your point, I mean why do people go around the world searching for parts to fix up a 1970 Plymouth or a 1965 Ford Mustang? Because the car is a classic right? well think about it in another 10 years the car will be 28 years old that's a classic in my eyes and honestly better to maintain than restore =) I have a passion for cars and this car has been my grandfathers(1994-2012) and mine (2012-2013). She will make it!

People find those cars because they have a value because of their desireability, lol. In 10 years, it'll be a 28 y/o car that no one cares about, instead of a 18 y/o car that no-one cares about...

The only brake upgrades for your car involve swapping knuckles. 95naSTA did a write-up on it a few years ago: http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/fo ... 29697.html

Otherwise, your best bet is probably to just use high-quality replacement parts and make sure your rear drums are working properly, and adjusted properly.

You may be absolutely right but i care about it, that's enough for me to put money into even as old as it is. Not only that but you obviously care enough about Pontiac's to have a forum based solely on them and cars related to/ similar to them. =) Sentimental value> Monetary value to the persons owing that special item they care about. Oh and Thank you for the Brake info not looking to do all of that so good aftermarket are good enough.

Same reason I still have my Buick. It may be old as dirt and doesn't run right now, but it was the first car I bought and modded. So, I'm willing to take my time and money to keep it running. It's a downhill battle, but I like a challenge.

Again, just personal preference.

(I've actually spent less money (mods included) on the Buick in the 12.5 years I've owned it than the 5 I've owned the Bonneville, so I believe that's another reason it's worth keeping.)

I appreciate that you understand the feeling. It will be a Uphill battle but that's the fun that you know you tried your hardest to keep it running forever. Like i said it still runs like it has 170k on it not 270k and the Mark is 500k =) i hope to make it and when it stops running i will park it and fix it like it was a classic even if others don't give two Sh*ts. By the way what's wrong with your Buick?

Yes, I meant to type uphill, but everyone gets the idea.

Age and salt finally got it, and the fuel lines by the filter are completely rotted. In addition, a few weeks ago when I attempted to bring it home where I had been storing it for the last 7 months (in the backyard grass at my aunt's), I popped a brake line (second in 5 years). I'm happy because it's home now, and in the spring my brother and I are going to tackle the fuel and brake lines - to at least get it back on the road until I can get the money, time, and a garage to restore it in.

Until then, and I hate to say it, I have to let it sit.
