sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
hi,
Its been awhile since I've been on...busy moving from the land of hurricanes, e.g. Ct, to Fla.
On my 97 Ssei y40,
Last year, i change the front right wheel bearing due to noise, , noisy going straight, louder on right turn, less on left, this 1 - 1.5 hr job was 8 cause i had to pull the orig bearing out piece by piece. i cleaned the knuckle and put the new one in. still noise. The short version of the next step is, i pulled the lower control arm to replace the ball joint, still noisy. i swapped types front to back, noise.
What are the next Steps? upper bj/cntr Arm? 00 Buck?
As always, Tia
Peter

Describing the noise would help us help you.
Does it sound like an airplane following you? Does it change with engine speed or with vehicle speed.
Also I don't think you are still moving to land of the hurricanes with Florida lol but that may just be me!

Re: sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
. the wheel didn't wobble when moved Side from either 9 & 3 o'clock (bearing)or 12 & 6 o'clock (bj) when in the air. the sound is like a prop plane and varies with speed. today someone suggested its the left bearing which doesn't make sense. could it be an axle or transacted Bearing?

Sounds like a bearing of some sort.
When driving and slightly swerving to the left or right does the sound get louder?

Re: sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
Louder on right turn means left wheel bearing cause you are putting weight and stress on that one and taking weight off the right on.
Very few american cars are opposite, from my wiring on cars.

Re: sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
I got that backwards. The noise is in the right side, thus left turn loads the bearing making less noise.
Could it be a transaxle or axle?

Re: sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
I just had to replace a 1.5 year old Timken bearing on my right front. I moved tires to see if it was uneven tire wear or belt problems in a tire. I did a curving street at about 30 mph and found that loading right side made it growl louder. Turning right unloaded it and it was silent.pmicaza wrote:Last year, i change the front right wheel bearing due to noise, , noisy going straight, louder on right turn, less on left, this 1 - 1.5 hr job was 8 cause i had to pull the orig bearing out piece by piece. ... i swapped types front to back, noise.
Bearing showed no wobble motion like the OEMs did. No in and out motion (GM spec is 0.05 in).
But the new bearing silenced the beast. My sound was a wow, wow, wow noise. Original bearing failed in an even sounding growl.
Re: sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
I had noise and replaced right lower bj cause the right bearing was ~1 year old, still noise with less than 100 miles so i replaced the right bearing again, still noise, swapped types, still noise. turn left, more noise. Turn right, less noise. With

Re: sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
this may seem like it may be out there, but have you checked your tires? my girlfriends bug had that wow wow wow noise which was mainly coming from the front left, sound would change when turning, but going straight an even wow wow wow sound, bought new tires after i replaced her brakes that I thought might help out with some issues in the front, turned out the front tire on that side was bad, had a shifted belt between the sidewall and tread section. didnt know it til after we got the new tires and the annoying sound was completely gone. might be worth checking into anyways.

Re: sounds like wheel bearing noise, but not
I did swap types front to back, no change. guess I'll try left to right and/or use the spare just to see. this niggling issue
have become quite an annoyance.

I think you've got that backwards still...
Loading the bearing will make more noise if it's bad, not less.
