brake problems!

Post by Rybo »

So the other day my brake pedal all of the sudden felt very stiff ... I thought something was stuck behind it but there was nothing, my brakes still work but I have to press on the pedal with all of my strength and the pedal will not go all the way down to the floor. What could be the problem? :dontknow:

Sounds like a failed brake booster, when you push the brake pedal with the engine running do you hear a whoosh vacuum / sucking sound inside or under the hood?

It could fail also and not hear the noise, if you hear nothing then check to make sure the vacuum line is attached to the booster and the intake manifold. Pop it off at the booster and make sure there is vacuum there to verify all is well with that. If there is vacuum there (the car will likely want to stall as soon as you pull that line off) but the brakes are hard to push (like they are normally with the engine off) then you have a failed booster.

I do hear the woosh noise under the dash when I press on the brake. so do I need a whole new brake booster?

Yep, sounds like a classic booster diaphragm failure.
