Re: boxes of happy parts on their way...
The spacer I made goes between the lim and the IC plate. This is due to the fact the the oldschool WBS plate I have has a thick core that has protrudes into the lim by about .50". The spacer moves the core completely out of the runners and will hopefully reduse the ammount of heatsoak from the lim to the IC coolant.

Re: boxes of happy parts on their way...
In talking to John about intense's plans, the meth plate that could double as a nitrous plate is a pretty solid idea. Obviously the spray length is less than ideal but were limited in where we can put nozzles anyway. My personal use of meth injection would partially be to clean my intercooler, so above the blower would be my only choice. It sounds like the cryogenic temperatures of nitrous are what's really destructive to rotor coatings, so W/M shouldn't hurt it too badly.
As for the customer service end of things, yes, ZZPs is pretty poor. However, they do have a lot of stuff intense just doesn't have. Johns personal aversion to intercoolers is another thing that might be a problem. It would be interesting to talk to Zoomer about how much money he's lost in sales because his guys are too busy to talk to perspective customers.

Oh I see the spacer plate now! Yes zzp has lots of goodies. And yes Intense does talk down to Intercoolers which is funny being that they have to admit they make safe hp. I think it's a grudge thing against zzp.lol

How far in did you go into the runners when you ported? I am thinkin 1/2-3/4" for gasket matching which will help them flow. No bowl blending for me.

Re: boxes of happy parts on their way...
The portwork goes from the inner radius in the heads all the way to the middle of the intake runners. Past that point they are flared out enouhh that theres no point to opening them up. The whole port from plenum to intake valve was looked at as one part and ported as such. This did include gasket matching ony as a means to open things up to a safe and consistant size.
Gasket matching for its own sake is counterproductive. Without maintaining a consistant or at least consistantly tapered corss section to the port, your flow will suffer. Its not about port volume, but the thought that goes into making the easiest pat for air to follow.

I like seing progress on builds, thanks for keeping it posted, looks good. I dig the Black blower. Side note, i have had nothing but great service and nicely built products from ZZP accross the last 5-10 yrs i have been buying from them. lol maybe im one of the lucky few, but i have been nothing but happy with ZZP.

Believe me I understand porting, opening these up too much without a gear and stall speed will be useless at the bottom end.

Re: boxes of happy parts on their way...
Well, generally, yes, but a supercharger changes things. You can get away with more port volume. And honestly, the overabundance of torque with these engines is what kills transaxles and makes it difficult to get grip. Part of why I wanted to go turbo. But my point about gasket matching wasn't about too big of ports. It was more in reference to the fact that the gasket is bigger than the port the whole way. So if you match the openings to the gasket, the port will get bigger where the gasket is, then smaller toward the valve.
Also, I can't get this dag blasted engine out.

I just wanted to update the Marty situation nd let everyone know that he has sent me a cashier's check for the amount that I asked for and were settled up. Hopefully he is a little more communicative in future ventures, to avoid the kind of thing that went on here.
I'll be posting some more progress pics today. Stay tuned.

Re: boxes of happy parts on their way...
Got the fuel pump hot wire in and have the new steering rack most of the way installed. However the new rack did not completely fix the steering slop I was experiencing. Further investigation revealed that while there was a certain amount of play present in the old rack, some is coming from either the ISSor somewhere in the steering column. Im inclined to believe its the ISS since it was preemptively replaced when the transmission was rebuilt. I guess thats what Ill be doing tomorrow morning before work.
In the engine department, the machine shop called me on wednesday to tell me that in order to use the ARP connecting rod bolts, my rods need to be resized. Still not sure why its just with arp bolts but in any case its a bigger pain than it sounds like. Nobody makes bearings for oversized rods and stock sized crank journals. Therefore the crank has to be ground -.010. More additional cost i just dont feel like putting into it. Either way, Im hoping the shortblock will finally be done sometime this week and I can assemble the rest of the motor in time to try to get it in next weekend.
Need to make another parts order for outer tierod ends, ac delco gxp struts, lq4 maf...

Great to see the progress coming along on this! On the resizing of the rods, from what I've read before over at LS1tech, it's because the ARP bolts have a greater clamping force, and if you don't resize the rods, when they are torqued the rod will be slightly out of round and cause the bearing to oval out instead of saying perfectly circular. I'm not 100% sure if that's why they need to be resized on the 3800, but that's what I've heard before on the other rods. At least you'll know that the crank will be perfect when it goes back in though. I can't wait to see the motor go back in and hear her roar again!

Looking good. Is your I/C a kit or did you piece it? I ended up buying a I/C alone and will be piecing the rest.

Re: boxes of happy parts on their way...
The extra clamping force and the wear and tear from previous use are what seem to run the rods out of round. Still doesn't sound totally right, it sounds like too much clamping force if it tweeks the big end. Idunno.
The intercooler setup started out as a kit that I bought used but all I've kept of the original setup is the core and I should have replaced that long ago. A need phenolic core would be a much better choice for my setup. By the time you add up all the parts I've bought, it would've made sense to buy the zap stage 3 or whatever their big phenolic one is.

Maybe I'm not following you here, but why is the machinist telling you he can't order two different sized bearing sets?yourgrandma wrote:Nobody makes bearings for oversized rods and stock sized crank journals.
My LG3 is .030 over on the rods and .010 over on the mains.
Just out of curiosity, what is the tolerance your machinist can hold on runout on both rod and main journals?

Re: boxes of happy parts on their way...
It's not the crank mains that need to be cut. The rod bearings aren't available with stock journal size and oversized rod ends. It's both or stock.
I don't know what their specific tolerance is
