brake light on and constant chime

Post by mckcuzzi »

94 bonneville- yesterday as i driving the brake light came on and there was a constant chiming noise. I checked the brake fluid res and it was low. so I replaced the front brake pads, bled the brakes, and fill the res... the light went off for a second and then came back on with the noise. My abs wheel sensor is out on the passenger hub. And after i drive the car i smell a burnt smell coming from the passenger tire and the rim and rotors are hot to the touch. ne clues on what's going on???

Lift the passenger tire off the ground, it should spin free. The caliper may be hanging up, or a wheel bearing could be bad. The ABS has it's own light.

The brake light comes on when the reservoir is low, or the parking brake is engaged.

I had a similar problem the whole year of 2011 until I finally figured it out after going through 3 sets of shoes. It was a "proportioning valve". It is very rare that these fail, but the valve was letting in fluid and not releasing. Needless to say it caused a lot of headaches. Also, I had a couple rusty lines that were leaking, so brake pressure was to a minimum and had to replace them. I heard that chiming and had the brake light on the systems monitor for months. Haven't had a problem since I replaced the leaking lines and valve.

yesterday i notice when i check the car, the reservoir tank was back to min after being max when i changed the pads. the only driving i did before that was from the guy who changed my pads to my house. and the rim and rotor on the passenger side was extremely hot but i didn't see any sings of leakage whatsoever

Your brake fluid is going somewhere. Leaking caliper(s), leaking rear wheel cylinder(s), leaking line(s) or hose(s), leaking master cylinder (either externally, or internally, into the booster). Or maybe you didn't top up the fluid after pumping the pedal up following the pad job? The low fluid issue should be your first concern. Then, once that is sorted out, and the brakes are fully and properly bled, you can start to diagnose the r.f. "overheating" issue.
