Re: Trade-in Value
If everything is in good shape.
I would think the dealer would probably offer somewhere around $3000.
Considering they are out to rip you off. $3500-$4000. Would probably be fair value.
But sometimes they offer a great price on the trade but the new vehicle you are buying is jacked way up.
I would think you could get at least $4000 maybe up to $6000 private party

Trade in? Without looking at KBB, I would imagine around $1,500 - $2,000.

Re: Trade-in Value
Yup $1,500-$2,000 cause its too old for most new car dealers, they are just going to auction it off so they need to be lower than they think they will get at the auction.
You are much better off selling it Private Party, prolly end up with another $1,000 in your pocket.

My buddy just traded in his 02 SLE with 282k on it for $2500 and that was a steal.

Re: Trade-in Value
From what I found the last go-around with buying a car, most dealers go by NADA "Clean" trade-in, if in decent shape. KBB's trade in value isn't far off either, though. Unless your SSEi has enough issues that you feel guilty selling it private party to someone, I'd sell it private party.

Trading in a car is for lazy people. Selling outright will net you soooo much more.

Re: Trade-in Value
As a salesman, sell it private party. As stated before, most dealers consider that old an high mileage, and are just going to auction it off, so they want to get it dirt cheap. Best case scenario they will "over-allow" on your trade, and just jack up the price of the new car.

Would any of his mods have any effect on value?

Re: Trade-in Value
The mods don't have a value, in fact in my experience, if overdone will detract from the value. In any event I didn't call attention to anything under the hood, but whoever buys it will have a pleasant surprise when they jump on the go pedal. I'm fairly confident the car will need a transmission in the next 25-35k, it's a little rough getting into and out of TCC lockup, but that could be the shift kit installed many months ago.
Dealer offered me 3k after a lot of haggling. Sure a portion of that is from the markup on the car I'm sure, but I can't imagine a whole lot of margin in what I paid. Trade-in was a steal considering the A/C on the Bonneville doesn't work (though I did replace the compressor, pretty sure it just needs evac & recharged), stability control likes to lock up the brakes without warning on the freeway with no ryhme or reason (talk about dangerous), trunk leaks in heavy rain. I might be forgetting some, but otherwise it was a clean 170k 12 year old car. I never did fix the front end damage when someone backed into me, rather I pocketed the 900$ insurance payout, but right now it's just some spiderwebbing in the paint someone else will have to deal with.

Re: Trade-in Value
That's excellent for a trade-in price, but you know you could probably get $1k more if you sold it yourself.

Re: Trade-in Value
No doubt I could have gotten more selling it privately, but it takes some time around here, plus in this area a/c is more or less essential if you want to sell something, I certainly wouldn't get a good price without it because people assume the worst with a.c. repairs. That's a big hassle not on my plate, that and the time saved I think helps recoup that some, not to mention the extra interest and possible rate hike not having that extra 3k down would yield.
