PCM tuning, OBD-1

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

PCM tuning, OBD-1

Post by MattStrike »

Does anybody here know a lot about tuning the OBD-1 PCMs? Specifically the '93? I'd bet I know one member who would be able to answer my questions, but...

Software and hardware? I thought I'd heard there was a real-time or live tuning package. The biggest reason for the tuning capabilities is that the '93 pcm won't be running hardware from '93, or even the same aspiration

This is one of those projects I can actually get underway without spending money, so it won't sit in 'The MattStrike Notebook" as long as certain other projects (brakes, bumper skirt version 5, pulley, etc.). If everything works out, it should be done early July, depending on the software availability. I've had this super crazy idea about the LG3, and I don't need to buy anything to prove/disprove the theory (just need the tuner dial it in if it works).

I don't know about real time alterations in the eprom tables. The 93 PCM uses a regular eprom, not a flash rom. About the only thing you could do is use some form of eprom emulator plugged into the socket in place of the calibrator prom.

To do regular alterations to the calibration prom, use a regular eprom reader/burner (I use a USB one from Batronix), a UV eraser, and TunerCat software to work the tables. You can take a GM calibrator prom and zif socket it so it is easy to access the eprom over and over. About $200 worth of gear & software to do as many proms as you want.

A little more elaborate alteration to the calibrator prom is to install an EEROM in place of the calibrator's eprom. The PCM is still missing the required circuitry to erase and reprogram it directly, but with the EEPROM in place, you never have to take the calibrator prom apart to erase and reprogram it. Just remove the calibrator from the PCM, use an header plug to fit it to your eprom reader/burner, erase it, program it, then reinstall it into the PCM to try it out.
