Foggy Center Tail fix!

Post by bad.moshi »

It's not perfect, but they look much better. Because my center tails were looking rather dull, I figured I'd take a little time to polish them up and see what I could do. Granted, I was just using regular Maguires Polishing Compound (and not a true headlight resto alternative), but I think it looks better.

I didn't think to take a picture before I started work, so instead I started taking pictures after having done one side. Here goes!

I decided to add a little bit of Maguires ultimate wax to the tails because I know some people have problems with these just re-dulling within a couple of weeks, hopefully that might at least give it a little protection. Anyway, like I said... It's not perfect, and I know there are products built for it, but for a slow day and a few basic items can make a pretty reasonable difference if you're just trying to shine them up!

Looks great. I usually buff out headlights and tails while doing the rest of the body. knock on wood, I have never ever had cloudy lenses.

They look much better!

Did you use a buffer, a drill with a polishing ball, or by hand?

I tried applying some Meguiar's plastic cleaner http://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-Clear-Pl ... 52&sr=1-63 , followed by some of their plastic polish
http://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-10-Clear ... 17&sr=1-62

by hand with these 2000 grit abrasive discs http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Abralon-San ... s_indust_5

on my foggy center tail lights, and although a lot of crud sloughed off and they became much smoother, they still looked cloudy compared to the other half even though I used the same on both parts. But this combo worked well at clearing up the cloudy yellow headlights on my '94 Ranger work truck.

I need to try that Meguiar's polishing compound for those cloudy tails! (I may even already have some buried in the bin of car detailing supplies in my organizational disaster of a garage...)

A little sandpaper, starting at 1000 and going up to 2000, then polishing helps a lot. I need to do this on all 4 corners of the 'Hoe.
